Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to attend the OSCE seminar on military doctrine in Vienna

On Monday, 13 February Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Tutkus leaves for Vienna, Austria, to attend a two-day seminar organised by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) there. The seminar, organised by the Forum for Security Co-operation, will focus on new threats and emerging technology. The event is expected to gather more than 300 high-level officials from across the OSCE region and its partner States.

Lithuanian to attend NATO Crisis Management Exercise CMX 2006

On 1-7 March Lithuania will take part in NATO's annual crisis management exercise (CMX 2006). The exercise will be attended by all Lithuanian institutions dealing with crisis management. Lithuania will take part in the exercise for the second time already. In 2004 Lithuania participated in the crisis management exercise in the status of observers.

First Deputy of Ukrainian Minister of Defence to visit Vilnius

On Tuesday, 28 February First Deputy of Ukrainian Minister of Defence Leonid Poliakov comes with a two-day visit to Lithuania. The visitor is scheduled to meet with Lithuanian Minster of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas. Later L. Poliakov will meet with the Lithuanian National Defence Ministry's Undersecretary Renatas Norkus to discuss issues covering Lithuanian –Ukrainian co-operation in the field of defence and Lithuania's support of Ukrainian NATO integration efforts.

Nordic - Baltic States - US Undersecretaries of Defence to hold a meeting in Vilnius

On 28 February - 1 March, in Vilnius, an informal meeting of Undersecretaries of Defence Ministries responsible for defence policy issues of the Nordic, Baltic States and the US will gather for an informal meeting in Vilnius. While during the event, the Lithuanian delegation will be headed by Undersecretary of Ministry of National Defence Renatas Norkus. During the meeting, the Undersecretaries will discuss relations between NATO and the EU and their partnership prospects.

Minister of National Defence to meet with Director of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces

On Tuesday, 28 February Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas will meet with the Director of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, Ambassador Theodor H. Winkler. The meeting is expected to focus on possible more active co-operation capabilities between Lithuania and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces.

Upon successful completion of a mission, LITCON-6 servicemen to receive awards

On Friday, 24 February an official ceremony will be held to award servicemen upon their successful completion of a peacekeeping mission in Iraq. The servicemen will be awarded Medals for International Missions. The medals will be conferred on servicemen by Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas. The servicemen will also be congratulated by the Acting Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius.

The most literate Lithuanian - a female member of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces!

imgOn 18 February the final stage of Lithuania's national dictation competition, entitled ”I can write in Lithuanian", took place in Vilnius. The winner of the event was a female member of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces (NDVF), Akvilė Andziukevičiūtė. 50 participants, who achieved the best results in the first stage of the dictation, were invited to compete in the final stage of the event. The task was very demanding but Akvile Andziukevičiūtė did not make a single mistake. She was announced the winner by a ten-member commission.

Military Medical Service to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its restoration

On Wednesday, 22 February Military medical Service of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will mark its 15th anniversary of its restoration. An official event, designed to mark the occasion, will be attended by Vice-Minister of National Defence Ministry Gintautas Sivickas, Acting Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Logistics Command, Colonel Virginijus Mažuika, commanders of Lithuanian military units, representatives of civilian medical institutions the Military Medical Service maintains close co-operation with, ex-commanders and former personnel of the Military Medical Service.

Foreign defence attaches accredited to Lithuania to meet in Vilnius

Between 15-16 February foreign Defence Attaches (DAs) accredited to Lithuania will be visiting Vilnius. On Wednesday, 15 February, at the Ministry of National Defence, foreign DAs will meet with the Ministry's Undersecretary Renatas Norkus. The meeting will focus on long-term plans of the Lithuanian Armed Forces; the meeting is also expected to talk over issues covering budget and finance as well as resources and programmes.

The Lithuanian Chief of Defence met in Vienna with OSCE Secretary General

On Tuesday, 14 February Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Valdas Tutkus, met in Vienna (Austria) with the Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Marc Perrin de Brichambaut. During the meeting, the officials discussed regional military and energetic security issues. The OSCE Secretary General thanked the Lithuanian Chief of Defence for an active participation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the OSCE activity and the country's significant contribution to international operations in ensuring security all over the world.
