Let‘s celebrate Lithuania‘s NATO membership together!

“Lithuania and the entire region is probably facing the biggest security threats today since regaining independence, yet the membership in the Alliance ensures an effective deterrence. NATO is and remains to be the key security assurance not only to Lithuania, but the entire Trans-Atlantic community,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says.

This year the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) celebrates its 70th anniversary and Lithuania – its 15th anniversary of NATO membership. NATO is the most successful Alliance in history that today unites 29 democracies, European and North American countries that value freedom, human rights, and the rule of law.

We are an alliance, bound by shared history, values and goals. Together we work to prevent conflict and preserve peace for nearly one billion people. Our solemn commitment to each other is that an attack against one Ally is an attack against us all. This bond guarantees our prosperity and security, and allows us to live our lives in freedom.

Our world is changing and NATO is changing with it. But some things remain unchanged: our commitment to one another endures, giving us the strength to overcome our differences and rise to any challenge. Standing with unity and resolve in defence of our values, NATO will remain a pillar of stability in an uncertain world for the next generations.

Lithuania joined the ranks of NATO 15 year ago, on 29 March 2004

As a member of NATO Lithuania not only makes a weighty contribution to the stability and peace in the region, Europe, and the world, but also ensures the security, freedom and prosperity of its people.

Everyone, residents and guests of Vilnius, big and small, are invited to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Lithuania’s membership in NATO “15 Years in NATO!” at noon on March 30 in Simonas Daukantas Square in front of the Ministry of National Defence. Top leadership of the country will greet the audience and the flags of Lithuania and NATO will be hoisted with participation of representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Seimas, Government, and foreign guests.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces Honour Guard Company will give a celebratory performance with gun discharges, the current NATO Air Policing Mission rotation of the Polish Armed Forces is expected to congratulate Lithuania with a fly-past in their F-16 fighter jets.

During the celebration a static display of military equipment and weaponry brought to Lithuania by our allies. 36 tone Boxer wheeled infantry fighting vehicle, Fenek armoured reconnaissance vehicle, and other equipment brought by the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group deployed in Lithuania several years ago will be available for viewing at Universiteto str. and in the square in front of the Ministry of National Defence.

The event will be conducted to the tunes of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Band, Trimitas State Wind Orchestra, and the Representative Wind Orchestra of the Ministry of the Interior, musical campaign for schoolchildren “What We Do Is For Peace” will be taking place at the same time. At 1300hrs a concert by the National Defence Volunteer Force Big Band and soloists and by the Kivi Lithuanian Children and Youth Centre Choir will begin, various creative studios for kids, or not only kids, will be available.

Let‘s celebrate Lithuania‘s NATO membership together!

As a member of NATO, Lithuania not only stands in solidarity by contributing to the stability and preservation of peace in the region, Europe and the world, but also ensures the security, freedom, and welfare of its citizens.

Let’s mark this anniversary in solidarity, meaningfully and in joy!

We are inviting all municipalities of the country to pull together the communities of local schools, business, and NGOs, invite representatives from military units based in their regions, and to hoist Lithuanian and NATO flags on March 29, to arrange exciting celebrations on the theme of “15 Years in NATO!” And do take pictures of the celebrations to make the moments last – send up to 10 briefly describes (up to 5 sentences) pictures (up to 1MB) by e-mail to:
