The rapid response unit formed by Lithuania and 8 more countries has been approved as ready to act at a meeting in London

10,000 troops from nine countries are ready to deploy any time in case an emergency needed as response. It is signalled by the final Common Memorandum of Understanding signed om 28 June  in London by Lithuania and 8 more like-minded countries on the formation of the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF). The document marks the completed formation and full operational readiness of the force. The United Kingdom is the author of the initiative joined by Lithuania and seven more, mainly Baltic region countries: Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, and Sweden.

“Publication of “Artis magnae artilleriae”, the main Europe’s manual on the subject by world-renowned scientist Kazimieras Semenavičius for over two centuries, in native language this year as Lithuania celebrates its centenary of re-established state and armed forces is symbolic and immensely meaningful,” Vice Minister of National Defence Giedrimas Jeglinskas says ahead of attending the book presentation on July 5 at Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas.

Military salaries to be raised as off July

As soon as next month military personnel will receive higher salaries by an average of one tenth an their social security will increase likewise. It is provided by amendments to the Law on the Organisation of the National Defence System and Military Service which concern improvement of the system of calculating military salaries and soldiers’ social security package that have been approved today.

Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will be conducting a visit in London Thursday to sign the final Memorandum of Mutual Agreement on the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF).   NATO and UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force is a high readiness capability tailored for wide spectrum operations: from humanitarian aid, deterrence, to combat operations. The force will comply with NATO standards and procedures, will be suitable  for complementing other high readiness forces, and support actions by the United Nations, NATO, and the European Union.

Seimas adopted a breakthrough law for national cyber security

On Wednesday, June 27, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania adopted amendments to the Law on Cyber Security and the Code of Administrative Violations that consolidate the positions of the Lithuanian state in ensuring national cyber security and provide conditions to manage the incidents more efficiently and allow for a responsibility for actual violations.

If a major cyber incident strikes as soon as in the coming years, it would be responded to by an international cyber response force. A Declaration of Intent signed on development of the Lithuanian-initiated EU Cyber Rapid Response Force  teams at a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg today has laid a foundation for that.

On June 18-24 NATO fighter jets conducting the Air Policing Mission over the Baltic states were scrambled four times to identify and intercept Russian Federation aircraft flying in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On June 25 Minister of National Defence   Raimundas Karoblis will attend the session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.  Its highlight for Lithuania will be signature of the Declaration of Intent on creation of EU Cyber Response Force that Lithuania has initiated. The document will be the first step  on the way of closer cooperation of countries in the completion of the cyber defence project.

On June 22 a delegation of twelve largest and most influential media outlets of Japan came to Lithuania to familiarise with regional security situation and challenges. The guests met with Vice Minister of National Defence Edvinas Kerza and Head of the Department of Cyber Security and Information Technology Jonas Skardinskas and discussed Lithuania’s initiatives to develop rotation cyber response teams in the European Union that would be formed by personnel of cyber incident investigation and other security institutions of the participating countries.

On June 12-14 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with  US Congressmen and Senators, US Secretary of the Army Mark T. Esper, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflicts Owen West, representatives of the US National Security Council, and other high-ranking US officials while on a visit in the United States.  The meetings addressed regional security issues, priorities of the Baltic states in the upcoming NATO Summit,  further Lithuanian-US cooperation in defence area.
