“The United Kingdom is extremely important Lithuania’s ally, and the multinational Joint Expeditionary Force it leads is particularly important security and deterrence instrument to Lithuania. We need like-minded nations and high readiness forces that send a strong message that partners are ready to give a timely response to any unpredictable crises,” Vice Minister of National Defence    Vytautas Umbrasas, said on May 31 at a meeting with UK Major General  Stuart Skeates.

At 8.00 a.m. on May 31 Klaipėda Seaport will be entered one by one by 37 ships from 16 countries– roughly 4 thousand sea personnel will deploy to train in the largest annual international naval exercise BALTOPS 2018. This is the first time Lithuania has been entrusted with organisation of BALTOPS preparation phase.

Camp 500, an exercising force camp set up on the German Armed Forces funds at the Lithuanian Armed Forces General Silvsetras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė, has been transferred to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group. It will provide temporary accommodation for NATO eFP soldiers on training in the military area.

From now on, the Allied troops during military exercises or other military cooperation events to Lithuania will arrive faster and easier - for example, instead of the usual entry through the border checkpoints they will be able to land from air or debark from sea.

On May 21-27 NATO fighter jets conducting the Air Policing Mission over the Baltic states were scrambled twice to identify and intercept Russian Federation aircraft flying in the international airspace over the Baltic sea.

On May 25-27 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will visit Tbilisi at the invitation of Sakartvelo Defence Minister Levan Izoria to attend the 100th Anniversary Celebrations of the Sakartvelo Independence. The First Democratic Republic of Sakravelo was proclaimed on May 26, 1918.

On May 22 Lithuania and Denmark signed a Memorandum of Understanding on affiliation of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Griffin of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to the Royal Danish Army Division. It marks the beginning of regular participation of the staff and personnel of the MIB Griffin in Danish-arranged training and exercises.

Participation of Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, commanders of the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ services, and other guests is expected.
