Portugal to take the lead of the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission, Spain and France to send augmentation

On May 2 rotations conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states will change over at the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai. After four months of duty the Danish Air Force Detachment will hand over the mission to colleagues from Portugal and Spain. Portugal will head the 47th NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission and patrol the Baltic skies with four F-16s. Spain will deploy six Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft to Šiauliai and France – four Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to the Amari Airbase in Estonia to augment the mission.

On April 23-29 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled once to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

April 30, Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis arrived in Mali to visit Lithuanian military personnel serving in the United Nations peacekeeping operation MINUSMA and the European Union Training Mission  EUTM Mali. Lithuanian contingent in Mali, 41 servicemembers, is the second largest Lithuanian contribution to multinational operations.

Iceland´s deployment of a civilian expert to the enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battlegroup Lithuania is a new chapter in a story of close friendship between the two countries.

 The NATO eFP Battlegroup in Rukla, Lithuania, a 1.300 strong battalion led by the framework nation Germany, just received some reinforcements recently, when an Icelandic civilian joined the multinational force as a public affairs officer.

On April 24 Special Operations Task Group formed by soldiers of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces is joining the NATO-led Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan. The team of special forces advisors will train, advise and support Afghan security forces in the implementation of their tasks alongside other allies.

Lithuania takes part in the largest cyber defence Exercise Locked Shields

Lithuanian team formed mainly by personnel of the National Cyber Security Centre under the Ministry of National Defence is training is the largest and most advanced international cyber defence Exercise Locked Shields 2018 on April 25-27.

The NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) organises the exercise every year. The Lithuanian team is formed by the National Cyber Security Centre and specialists from other units of the National Defence System. This year the team is joined by cyber security specialists from the United States and the United Kingdom.
