Minister of National Defence departs for Bucharest Nine Defence Ministers meeting

On March 12 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis is leaving for Bucharest (Romania) to take part in the Bucharest Nine (B-9) Defence Ministers’ meeting at the invitation of his Romanian and Polish counterparts.

On March 12 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with Brendan Smith, Chairman of the Committee Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence of the Oireachtas, at the ministry of National Defence.

 

Vice Minister V. Umbrasas briefed the Irish delegation on the security situation in the Baltic region and factors creating tensions: he pointed out large-scale military drills of offensive character held near Lithuania’s borders, persistent cyber-attacks, and escalation of threats of hybrid type in the region. The Lithuanian side also presented the measures taken to strengthen defence forces, increase defence spending, and developing military cooperation with NATO and the EU.

On March 12 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of National Defense of  Poland Marek Łapiński. The officials discussed practical bilateral regional defence cooperation.

“We have to further build on practical cooperation of Lithuania and Poland in regional defence, concentrating efforts on coordination of operational defence plans is particularly important, as well as ensuring security of the Suwalki Gap and developing regional air defence system,” Vice Minister V. Umbrasas said.

Temporary infrastructure will be installed at the newly founded Brig Gen Motiejus Pečiulionis Artillery Battalion in Pajūris town (Šilalė district) as part of expansion of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Griffin of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Defence Materiel Agency under the Ministry of National Defence announced an international invitation to tender to procure the modular and transferable structures and equipment it needs on March 8.
