“The 29th of March is an immensely important date to Lithuania because the membership in a collective defence organisation gave us vital security guarantees, relevant to this day, an Lithuania will continue being an active and reliable ally,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said on Lithuania’s 14th anniversary of NATO membership.

Lithuanian Armed Forces is buying short-range air surveillance radars

The Lithuanian Armed Forces signed a contract with Israel’s company this month on procuring five gap filler short-range air surveillance radars and logistic maintenance services. The radars are planned to be installed in Varėna, Švenčionys, Vilnius, Jurbarkas and Pagėgiai.

On March 27 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Lithuania Shen Zhifei and wished him success in fulfilling the new duties.

Minister and Ambassador discussed bilateral defence relations of Lithuania and China. R. Karoblis thanked Ambassador Sh. Zhifei for the invitations for Lithuanian representatives to take part in security forums and seminars in China and stressed that it would allow getting a deeper understanding of the challenges China and the region was facing. China’s teachers delivering lectures at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania was noted as one of the best examples of practical cooperation enabling development of a constructive dialogue between Lithuanian and Chinese defence authorities.

Lithuania takes part in a joint EU project for European maritime security

On March 28 the European Defence Fund (EDF) signed the first contract in the project for strengthening European maritime surveillance and interdiction. Unmanned platforms (surface, underwater, air) will be used to that end.

 “Open Partnership for Better European Maritime Awareness” project (Ocean 2020) the Lithuanian Navy and the Baltic Institute of Advanced Technology takes part in will be implemented by a consortium of 42 partners from 15 European states.

On March 27-29 representatives of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Groups deployed in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland, are attending a workshop on environmental protection in Vilnius to address the issues soldiers face in the places of stationing or during exercises.

March 19 – 25 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled five times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international air space over the Baltic Sea.

On March 21 leadership of the National Defence System discussed the upcoming meeting of the Presidents of the United States and the three Baltic states, US support in strengthening the security in the region, and Lithuania’s efforts to strengthen defence capabilities, at a meeting with Dr Richard Hooker, US National Security Council’s Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Europe and Russia. Increasing security in international arena was also discussed.

Iceland joined the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Rukla, Lithuania, as of the second half of March.

“Iceland is a longstanding and trustworthy Lithuania’s partner, the first one to recognise the independence of our state. Therefore today it is joyous to have it joining NATO deterrence and defence efforts in the Baltic region and thus demonstrating the importance of solidarity and closer cooperation in countering threats to regional security. We highly appreciate it,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said.

On March 12-18 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea once.
