Minister R. Karoblis to meet with Lithuanian soldiers departing to take part in the United Nations operation in Mali


Friday, February 5, Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will observe final exercise of the Lithuanian soldiers deploying to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) at General S.Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė. “The deploying soldiers assume great responsibility and completion of the entrusted tasks together with German colleagues requires great professionalism and resolve. Our soldiers have that and they will contribute to security and stability in Mali while conducting the operation,” Minister R. Karoblis says.


On January 29 through February 2 Lithuanian Armed Forces soldiers of the second rotation of the Force Protection Unit are honing firing from dedicated weapons at a situational firing exercise at Gen S.Žukauskas Training Area. The exercise is directed by instructors with the General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre.


It is the final exercise the Lithuanian soldiers attend before deploying to the area of operation via Germany where they will join the German Contingent and proceed to Mali as part of the German unit by military air transport.


The second Force Protection Unit rotation includes 34 professional military service soldiers and soldiers with the 5th Territorial Unit, Vytis Military District, National Defence Volunteer Force. They will replace their colleagues from the 6th Territorial Unit, Resurrection Military District, National Defence Volunteer Force, and serve as part of the German Contingent in the area of operation. Lithuanian soldiers’ task in the operation is to ensure force security within the military base compound in Gao province, eastern part of Mali. Lithuanian servicemembers are not involved in combat actions in Operation MINUSMA.
