On December 12 the present NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was re-elected for the second term as head of the Alliance.

 

“We were able to achieve the most significant boost to collective defence in a quarter of athecentury under J.Stoltenberg’s lead, as well as got swift and principled reactions to Russian activities. I would also like to distinguish the appearance of constant attention to our region, deployment of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion in the Baltic states and Poland is certainly a history-making decision and an excellent example of NATO unity and cohesion. We expect continued work close together on stronger deterrence and defence and with assistance from our partners to the East and to the South,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said.

European Union approved Lithuania’s initiative to form EU rapid cyber-incident response

On December 11 25 European Union member states approved Lithuania’s initiative to strengthen European cooperation in cyber defence. Also, Lithuanian-proposed closer cooperation on the simplification of military transit is among the approved 17 Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) projects, developed to enhance European security, too.

On December 4 - 10 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled five times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Further NATO adaptation, implementation of the European Union security initiatives, and close cooperation with allies in ensuring security of Baltic region are the key points on next year’s Baltic defence policy agenda, Baltic Defence Ministers agreed at the meeting in Liepaja (Latvia) on December 8.

 

Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, Minister of Defence of Estonia Jüri Luik, and Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Bergmanis discussed regional security and Baltic defence cooperation.

Ukraine intends joining the work of the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Lithuania

“We think the experience of Ukraine’s energy and security, and defence institutions in protecting and strengthening national energy infrastructure and resilience is valuable. Once a member of the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence, Ukraine will be able to contribute to NATO efforts to strengthen energy security of NATO allies and to developing Alliance competence in energy infrastructure,” Vice Minister of National Defence V.Umbrasas said in a meeting with Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Nasalyk Ihor Stepanovych on December 8.

Baltic Defence Minister to meet in Liepaja

On December 7-8 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will attend the Baltic Defence Ministers’ meeting in Liepaja, Latvia. The Baltic counterparts will discuss joint Baltic security and defence projects, the upcoming NATO Summit of July 2018, relations with allies, and security and defence projects in the European Union context.  The Ministers will also address trilateral cooperation priorities for 2018.

On December 7 Croatian contingent joining the NATO eFP in Lithuania was introduced at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla. The soldiers were greeted by Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Valdemaras Rupšys, Commander of the Croatian Land Force Lieutenant General Mate Ostovic, Commander of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf Colonel Mindaugas Steponavičius, Commander of the NATO enhance Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group Lieutenant Colonel Thorsten Gensler, and members of the eFP.

On December 6 Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Ank Bijleveld-Schouten on a visit in Lithuania and Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis discussed the cooperation of their countries in the framework of the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in defence area, where Lithuania proposes means for simplifying movement of forces in Europe and also strengthening response to cyber-attacks by creating rapid response groups.

On December 6 Minister of Defence Ank Bijleveld-Schouten and Chief of Defence Admiral Rob Bauer of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and a delegation will come for a visit to Lithuania. The guests will meet with Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, leadership of the MoD and the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Lithuanian and the Dutch Defence Ministers will hold a bilateral meeting. Later the guest Minister and the Chief of Defence will visit the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė (Švenčionys distr.) to meet with soldiers of the Netherlands serving as part of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group and currently training in Exercise Winter Wolf.

On December 4 Vice Minister of National Defence Giedrimas Jeglinskas took part in the European Defence Industry Summit in Brussels. Participants of the event exchange views and insights on the strategic partnership between the European Union and NATO in mobilising resources for the development of European defence research and technology, discussed multilateral cooperation, investment into technology and innovation and enhancement of the European Single Market.
