Minister of National Defence met with the new Ambassador of Germany

On October Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with the newly appointed Ambassador of Germany to Lithuania HE Angelika Viets and Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Thorsten Fries.

 

At the meeting Minister R. Karoblis and HE Ambassador A. Viets discussed the successful bilateral security and defence cooperation of the two, Lithuania’s contribution to the national and international security was presented. Lithuanian’s Defence Minister stressed the importance of Germany’s leadership to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania for a stronger protection of the easternmost NATO allies.

On October 11-13 Vice minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas is conducting a visit in Georgia to attend the Georgian Defence and Security Conference in Batumi.  Vice Minister will speak on the panel addressing “NATO after the Warsaw Summit: Deterrence through Resilience and Implications for Partners”.

On October 10 the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Lithuania marks its 5th anniversary. Flags of two new members, the United States of America and Germany, will also be flown in the compound of the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania during the event.

On October 2-8 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled once to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On October 6 international anti-tank live fire exercise Hunter 2017 began at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area (Pabradė, Švenčionys distr.). At the exercise soldiers of the Lithuanian Land Force anti-tank units will practice live firing anti-tank weaponry, update and enhance their proficiency in anti-tank unit command and tactics, study mechanised and tank unit tactics of a potential hostile force, and share experience together with German and Norwegian infantry personnel deployed in Lithuania as the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group.

On October 6 head of the National Defence Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland Michał Jach and its members discussed opportunities for strengthening regional security with Vice Minister of National Defence Edvinas Kerza during a visit to the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. The officials underscored that Poland and Lithuania were especially close partners as seen from the establishment of the joint Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian Brigade, joint training in regional exercises, close cooperation during Exercise Zapad 2017, and other joint endeavours.

“Formation of the tri-national LITPOLUKRBRIG Brigade is symbolic of an agreement of sovereign countries to defend themselves together and to protect their shared values. Moreover, by providing a platform for sharing experience it helps Ukraine in its ambition to become a member of NATO,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said on October 5 in Lublin, Poland, at the commemoration the second anniversary of operation of the LITPOLUKRBRIG staff.

On October 4-11 Lithuania is for the ninth time training in NATO’s Crisis Management Exercise 2017 (CMX17), an event designed to test strategic political and military level consultations and decision-making procedures between allies and partners amidst a simulated crisis.

On October 5 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, Minister of Defence of Poland Antoni Macierewicz and Minister of Defence Army General Stepan Poltorak are signing an amendment to the agreement regarding the establishment of a joint military unit, LITPOLUKRBRIG Brigade, of 19 September 2014 approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, the Government of the Republic of Poland, and Ministers’ Cabinet of Ukraine.

Army Attaché of Ukraine accredited to Lithuania

On October 2 Lieutenant Colonel Andrii Stepanov was accredited as the Army Attaché of Ukraine in Lithuania at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence.

 

Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas welcomed the Army Attaché and stressed that “Ukraine will not be left to fight for the value and freedom of all of us alone; we appreciate Ukraine’s decision to appoint a land force attaché as a sign of recognition of our support and cooperation, and we will continue our assistance in your country’s fight for independence and territorial integrity.”
