On September 26 soldiers of the Portuguese rotational force are farewelled after having trained with the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Motorised Infantry Battalion (stationed in Tauragė) in Lithuania since June.

It was the third rotation Portugal had provided to carry out a four-month training period in Lithuania. The troops brought their dedicated equipment - Pandur II armoured vehicles and weaponry, and took part in training events, such as the largest multinational exercise in Lithuania Iron Wolf 2017 that ran for two weeks in southern, middle and eastern parts of Lithuania, Field Training Exercise Tauragė 2017, etc.

The Portuguese contingent was formed by approx. 100 soldiers with the 14th Infantry Regiment in Viseu, Portugal. They deployed the Lithuania after carrying out a standby for the NATO Response Force.

On August 29 the contingent was visited in Tauragė by President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa with a delegation of Portugal’s ministers and military commanders conducting a visit in Lithuania.

Lithuania provides full host nation support for deployed allied forces – lodging, meals, logistical support.

Portugal has also already deployed three rotations of the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states.

Portugal contributes to the work of the NATO Force Integration Unit in Lithuania with two staff officers.

As the Assurance Measures for the Baltic region agreed by NATO are strengthen since 2014, a rotational U.S. land force company is kept in Lithuania, also, companies deployed by Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, and Portugal have trained in Lithuania for several months so far.

There is a rotational company of the U.S. Army deployed in Lithuania. The U.S. troops train in situational training events and in joint exercises with units of the Lithuanian Land Force.
