Lithuania’s support to Georgia’s membership aspirations stands, R. Karoblis says

On September 26-28 Minister of Defence of Georgia Levan Izoria is conducting a formal visit in Lithuania. On September 27 he took part in a bilateral meeting with Minister of National Defence of Lithuania at the Ministry of National Defence.

 

Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said at the meeting Lithuania would continue supporting Georgia’s aspirations of NATO membership but stressed the need for reform at the same time. “Georgia’s defence sector reform is necessary not only for its NATO integration but also for its stronger national defence,” Minister underlined.

Georgia’s Defence Minister stressed the benefit of the bilateral cooperation and thanked Lithuania for the support to his country. “I am grateful to Lithuania for the partnership on the path towards Euro-integration and every kind of support in defence area,” L. Izoria said.

 

The bilateral meeting addressed security situation in the region, defence sector reform, multinational deployments, and aspects of bilateral cooperation.

 

After the meeting both Ministers went on to attend the opening of the Conference on Eastern Partnership Contribution to European Security and Defence – Practical Implementation of the Global Strategy of the European Union.

 

While on visit in Lithuania’s capital, Georgia’s Defence Minister will also meet with Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras at its headquarters in Vilnius.

 

Also, a meeting with Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius is planned.

 

Lithuania and Georgia cooperate actively in defence area. Georgia’s representatives are studying at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, Lithuanian Armed Forces School, Military Medical Service , Baltic Defence College in Estonia. High level visits, as well as English language teacher and cadet exchange between Lithuanian and Georgian military academies are taking place. Lithuania provides to Georgia consultations on strategic communication, cyber defence. Georgian soldiers are training in exercises in Lithuania and Lithuanians – in Georgia. Lithuania also supports implementation of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package (SNGP) projects – since 2015 Lithuania is contributing to the creation of NATO-Georgian Joint Training and Evaluation Centre (JTEC) alongside other Baltic and Nordic countries.
