President of the Republic of Portugal met Portuguese troops deployed in Lithuania


On 29 August President of the Republic of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa who is conducting a visit in Lithuania accompanied by defence ministers and chiefs of defence of the Republic of Portugal and the Republic of Lithuania met troops of Portuguese rotational forces deployed in Lithuania.


“It is the third time Portuguese troops have been deployed in Lithuania for exercise period, and joining other NATO initiatives of enhancing security in Lithuania, Portugal confirms that our allies share the same understanding of threats and obligations to collective defence,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said.


Since May this year about 100 troops of Portuguese rotational forces with their combat equipment have been deployed in Lithuania for a period of four months to carry out joint exercises together with Lithuanian troops. The Portuguese contingent is stationed in the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Motorised Infantry Battalion in Tauragė and together with the battalion troops participates in national and international exercises held in Lithuania.


Also, Portugal has sent its Air Force contingents to NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission three times.


Portugal contributes to the activities and tasks of NATO Force Integration Unit by sending two servicemen to work in the unit staff.


Prior to the visit in Tauragė, a meeting of President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and the President of the Republic of Portugal took place in Kaunas Officers’ Club. The heads of the states and their delegations discussed the security situation in Europe, NATO defence cooperation and development of bilateral relations.


Since the spring of 2014, in order to enhance the agreed NATO deterrence measures in the Baltic region, troops of the U.S. Army rotational company have been deployed in Lithuania, companies from Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Hungary, and Germany have also conducted training in our country for several months.
