Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders on August 14 – 20, 2017


On August 14–20 fighter aircraft deployed to conduct the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled three times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international air space over the Baltic Sea.


On August 17 NATO fighter aircraft scrambled twice. First two IL-20s flying from the mainland of the Russian Federation to Kaliningrad were intercepted. Then one more IL-20 was intercepted on its way from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia. The aircraft had flight plans, radio contact with regional air traffic control was kept, onboard transponders were off.


On August 18 NATO fighters intercepted one IL-20 flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia. Its onboard transponder was switched off, the crew kept radio contact with the regional air traffic ontrol centre and had a flight plan.
