Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders on June 19-25, 2017

On June 19-25 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled two times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

 

On June 21 NATO fighters carried out two scrambles to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. First the NATO fighter aircraft intercepted a group of Russian aircraft including one Tu-154 aircraft and two Su-27 fighters. The group flew from the mainland of the Russian Federation to Kaliningrad. The two fighter aircraft had a flight plan, their onboard transponders were switched off and the crews did not maintain radio communication. The Tu-154 flew according to a flight plan, the crew maintained radio contact and its onboard transponder was on. Next the NATO aircraft intercepted a group including 16 Russian aircraft flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia. The group included Su-27, Su-24, Su-34, Tu-154 andTu-134 aircraft. Tu-154 and Tu-134 had flight plans, their onboard transponders were on and radio contact was kept. The rest of the aircraft in the group did not have flight plans, did not use onboard transponders and did not keep radio contact.

On June 21 the Lithuanian Air Force recorded two breaches of state border of the Republic of Lithuania in national airspace near Dubičiai and Musteika (Varėna district). One An-2 civilian aircraft flew into Lithuanian airspace twice as recorded, at 02.03-02-17 p.m. and 02-14-02-17 p.m. Lithuanian time. The violation was recorded on airspace surveillance equipment and observed visually. The ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania delivered a note to the Embassy of Belarus regarding the incident on June 22.
