The United States of America is a loyal Lithuania’s partner ready to defence Lithuania and other Baltic states if there is a necessity, according to United States Secretary of Defense James Mattis conducting a visit in Lithuania. At the meeting with Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis the U.S. official underscored several times the U.S. commitment to enhance security in the eastern flank of the Alliance.

On May 8-9 Commander of the Royal Netherlands Army Lieutenant General Leo Beulen conducted a working visit in Lithuania. He met with leadership of the Lithuanian Land Force and the commander of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battlegroup as well as Dutch soldiers serving in the NATO unit.

On May 10 Secretary of Defense of the United States James Mattis is conducting first official visit in Lithuania. He is planned to hold bilateral discussion with President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis. The officials are expected to address bilateral military cooperation and measures to further strengthening Lithuanian and regional security. The U.S. Defense Secretary will proceed to have a working lunch with the Ministers of Defence of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. This is the first visit by the official responsible for the U.S. defence policy in our region which demonstrates special U.S. attention to the security of Lithuania and the Baltic state.

From May 1 to 7 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were not scrambled to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On May 1 Lithuanian Vessel Boarding Team serving aboard EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia German ship Rhein seized weapons in international waters in the Mediterranean after carrying out an inspection according to UN Security Council Resolution 2292 (2016) on the motor vessel EL MUKTHAR, flying a Libyan flag. This is the first successful seizure of illegal arms carried out under Operation Sophia since it was mandated in July 2016.

On May 4 King Philippe of Belgium met with President of Lithuania HE Dalia Grybauskaitė during a visit in Lithuania. Following the meeting at the Presidential Palace they both proceeded to meet with Belgian troops serving in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence battalion in Rukla.

Air force detachments conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic State changed over at Šiauliai Air Force Base

Air force detachments deployed to Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force to carry out air policing tasks in the Baltic states will rotated on May 2. After four months of air policing mission the Royal Netherlands Air Force Detachment handed over the task to the Polish Air Force Detachment with four F-16 Fighting Falcons. Polish pilots landed at Šiauliai Air Base with their F-16s on April 28.

On April 24-30 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States were scrambled once to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
