New U.S. Defence Attaché accredited to Lithuania

On May 31 Defence Attachés of the United States in Lithuania changed over at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. Lieutenant Colonel John C. Moore was farewelled and relinquished the position to Lieutenant Colonel Scott D. Thompson who was accredited at the event.

Lithuania’s increasing of defence spending demonstrates fulfilment of commitments and shows a great example to other NATO members, members of the U.S. Senate Committees on Appropriations and Armed Services said at a meeting with Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis at the Ministry of National Defence on May 31. Minister R.Karoblis pointed out that the Lithuanian Government will continue increasing the defence budget to reach 2.06 percent of GDP for defence as soon as next year, while the increase will be used for modern equipment, enhancement of the Lithuanian Armed Forces capabilities, modernisation and expansion of military infrastructure and training areas.

On May 29 roughly 200 soldiers of the Norwegian contingent assigned from the Telemark Battalion and Brigade Nord of the Norwegian Armed Forces flew in via Kaunas Airport to serve in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battalion Battlegroup in Lithuania based in Rukla.

 

“We are happy to be here and ready to carry out the assignments shoulder to shoulder with our allies in Lithuania,” commander of the Norwegian company Captain Brage Reinaas said.

On May 30 traditional Boating Knots awards of the National Defence System were presented to soldiers for distinguished achievements in public affairs and to divisions of the national defence system for activeness and initiative. The awards were also given to individuals who had contributed to raising public awareness of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

On May 26 soldiers of the Kingdom of Belgium were farewelled and decorated at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment after finishing their rotation in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battlegroup in Lithuania. This is the first rotation of soldiers assigned to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battlegroup to finish their tour of duty in Lithuania.

On May 22-28 NATO Air Policing fighter aircraft in the Baltic states conducted six alert scrambles to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

 

On May 22 NATO aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled to intercept one An-26 of the Russian Federation flying from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad in international airspace over the Baltic sea. The aircraft flew according to a pre-filed flight plan, maintained radio contact, its onboard transponder was off.

On May 29 roughly 200 soldiers of the Norwegian contingent assigned from the Telemark Battalion and Brigade Nord of the Norwegian Armed Forces are deploying in Lithuania to serve in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battalion Battlegroup.

 

The Norwegian force’s equipment was brought via Klaipėda Seaport last week. It includes roughly 60 vehicles – various modifications of Leopard tanks, CV 90 IFVs, M113 armoured vehicles of different modifications, other cargo and light vehicles.

Friday, Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1), will arrive in Klaipeda, Lithuania for a scheduled port visit as part of the group’s deployment to the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is an area of great strategic importance, where NATO maritime units are able to provide an important contribution to NATO`s enhanced forward presence in the region.
