Lithuanian military instructors share experience with Ukrainian soldiers

From February to April two military instructors with the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment, Senior Enlisted Advisor Sergeant Major Aleksandras Balionis and Senior Instructor Master Sergeant Vitalijus Jampolcevas, shared experience with Ukrainian military instructors at the Training Centre of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in Desna. They also observed the training delivered by Ukrainian career soldiers and military instructors during the 7-week long Basic Military Course.

 

“Transition to military training in accordance with NATO standards and requirements is vital and really useful for Ukraine’s soldiers, regardless of the difficulties that have to be overcome,” Sgt Maj A. Balionis said after finishing his second deployment to Ukraine.

 

Lithuanian soldiers have been taking part in training programmes for Ukrainian military since 2015. Currently a group of instructors mainly from Vaidotas Battalion is deployed as part of the U.S.-led Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine apart from the instructors with the Training Regiment of the Lithuanian Land Force who are currently serving at the Yavoriv Training Area. Soldiers of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces are also transferring experience to Ukrainian colleagues by taking part in the Ukrainian special forces development programs, and members of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Training and Doctrine Command provide assistance regarding development of basic military training system.

 

Over 200 Lithuanian military instructors rotated in Ukrainian forces training programmes in Ukraine in 2016 alone.

 

Lithuania supports the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and its European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Cooperation with Ukraine is one of Lithuania’s key foreign and security policy areas.

 

According to a public opinion poll carried out by request of the Ministry of National Defence in December 2016, the population of Lithuania support Lithuania’s military assistance to Ukraine as well – 63% of respondents were completely in favor or in favor of it.
