Fifth Lithuanian officer began service with the UN Mission in Mali

The fifth Lithuanian staff officer with the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Mechanised Battalion, Lithuanian Armed Forces, began service in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). Until September he will serve as an intelligence officer in a Danish-led intelligence unit.

Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania has recently released a publication "Lithuanian Defence System: Facts and Trends 2017". The content of the publication encompasses the main figures and trends in Lithuanian defence budget, Armed Forces modernisation & personnel, cyber security, commitment to international security and other issues.

NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion in Lithuania began training

Troops and equipment of the core contingent of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battalion Battlegroup have undergone the first exercise. In the first week of March German soldiers attached to the eFP battalion took part in a live fire exercise at the Lithuanian Armed Forces Training Area in Kazlų Rūda.

 

At the moment there are over 400 German soldiers, 100 Belgian soldiers, and a group of Dutch soldiers in Lithuania already. Late this month the main component of the Netherlands will deploy with equipment, in May the eFP battlegroup will be joined by Norwegians.

Lithuania marks the 27th independence reinstatement anniversary

On 11 March 1990 Lithuania was re-established as an independent and democratic state. The national defence system and the society will commemorate the date in a number of events accross Lithuania.

 

Among others, late in the evening of March 10 a traditional song and memory evening “The Fires of March 11” will be held on Table Hill in the Park of Hills of Vilnius. Also, Lithuanian and allied troops deployed in Rukla (Jonava district) will take part in a traditional run together with schoolchildren and anyone wishing to mark Independence Reinstatement Day. At the same time, display of U.S., German, Belgian, and Dutch military equipment will be available, everyone will be able to see the cutting-edge equipment and weaponry operated by the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion.

On February 27 - March 5 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were not scrambled to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

“Lithuania supports the European Union security enhancement initiatives, however, the EU has to step cooperation with NATO and find more efficient ways of synergy with the Alliance in order to their implementation,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said at the joint European Defence and Foreign Defence Ministers session in Brussels today, March 6.

First Lithuanian Vessel Boarding Team deployed to EUNAVFOR MED Operation SOPHIA in the Mediterranean

On March 6 the first Lithuania’s Vessel Boarding Team (VBT) was deployed to EUNAVFOR MED Operation SOPHIA in the Mediterranean at a ceremony at the Naval Flotilla, Lithuanian Navy. The team of 12 will serve aboard FGS Rhein of the German Navy. They are planned to be replaced by the second Vessel Boarding Team after two or three months.

On March 2 Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel concluded his visit in Lithuania with a visit to Rukla to meet with the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) soldiers.

 

The Minister met with German, Belgian and Dutch soldiers deployed in Rukla since January. Commander of the NATO eFP Battalion Battlegroup Colonel Christoph Huber told the Federal Minister of Defence about the deployment and activities of the unit.

On March 2 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas attended a ceremony at the Presidential Palace where Minister of Defence of Germany Ursula von der Leyen was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania by President of the Republic of Lithuania HE Dalia Grybauskaitė.
