“Establishment of the Light Infantry Brigade Aukštaitija is a big day for the Lithuanian Armed Forces and for national defence. Developments and changes in geopolitical situation of the recent years demonstrate that freedom and independence can not be taken for granted any longer. Lithuania needs a capable Armed Forces, therefore I wish Aukštaitija to grow and strengthen, so that you are able to defence our independence on land, at sea, in the air, in cyberspace and information space,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said at the ceremony of bestowing an organisational flag on the new unit.

On March 23 Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award, Medal of Honorary Recognition, was presented to Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr Vaidotas Urbelis.

 

“I appreciate the personal contribution of Vaidotas Urbelis to fostering the cooperation of our countries and provision of security guarantees,” Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Bergmanis said upon bestowing the decoration.

On March 22 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis reaffirmed Lithuania’s readiness to host allied capabilities at a meeting with General Tod D. WOLTERS, Commander AIRCOM/ USAFE-AFRICA.

 

“NATO missions like the Baltic Air Policing mission demonstrate NATO’s resolve and determination to ensure protection across Allied airspace, including for those Allies that do not have their own Air Policing assets. At Allied Air Command we work together with all NATO Air Chiefs to provide Air Power for steadfast and defensive Alliance, committed to peace and security,” General T. D. Wolters underscored.

On March 23-24 Chief of Staff of the Federal Republic of Germany General Volker Wieker is conducting a formal visit in Lithuania.

 

General will pay a visit to the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla to meet with German and other allies’ forces deployed as the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battlegroup and to observe a joint training operation of the NATO eFP troops and Lithuanian infantry.

On March 21 military equipment of the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces arrived in Lithuania via Klaipėda Seaport to be used by the German-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battalion Battlegroup in Lithuania (based in Rukla).

 

The brought equipment includes roughly 40 military vehicles, including CV 90 infantry fighting vehicles, Fennek reconnaissance vehicles, Boxer multirole vehicles, armoured recovery vehicles, etc.

Brigadier General Almantas Leika who was in the lead of the Lithuanian Land Force from 2011 to 2016 and is now posted to the Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum has been awarded one of the highest military awards in the United States, the Legion of Merit, for the weighty contribution to the development of partnership between the Lithuanian Land Force and the U.S. Army, and for personal efforts to strengthen the cooperation of Lithuania, U.S. and NATO. The medal was presented to Brig Gen A.Leika by Commander of the U.S. Army Europe Brigadier General B. Hodges.

On March 13-19 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled once to intercept a military aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Dutch soldiers and equipment join NATO enhanced Forward Presence battalion in Lithuania

On March 21-23 soldiers of the Netherlands Armed Forces deploy to Lithuania to join the German-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion in Lithuania since late January. On March 21 roughly 40 military vehicles, including CV 90 infantry fighting vehicles, Fennek reconnaissance vehicles, Boxer multirole vehicles, armoured recovery vehicles, etc., of the Dutch mechanised infantry battalion will be brought via Klaipėda Seaport. On March 23 the main group of Dutch troops (roughly 100) will fly in via Šiauliai Air Base. In total, over 200 soldiers of the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces will be serving in Lithuania.

On March 17 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas discussed security situation in the region, and bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Director of Security and Defence Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland Arnór Sigurjónsson conducting his first formal visit in Vilnius.
