Minister R. Karoblis met with high-level U.S. security and defence experts


On March 28 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with high-level U.S. experts of security and defence. The Minister underlined the complexity of security threats surrounding the Baltic region, and presented priorities of the Lithuanian Government in strengthening national defence.


Minister R. Karoblis stressed that the United States’ support to enhancing deterrence and to assurance measures to Lithuania and the other Baltic countries is one of the underlying fundamentals of security in the region.


At the meeting with the U.S. experts Minister R.Karoblis pointed out that the changed security environment required a corresponding shift in NATO. “NATO must adapt to the changed security environment. It is necessary not only to deter but also to respond immediately to any threat. Deterrence and readiness encompasses everything: military presence in our country and region, readiness to deploy reinforcement additionally, and the ability to take decisions quickly within the Alliance,” R.Karoblis said.


The Minister and the U.S. experts also discussed cyber security, hostile propaganda in Lithuania’s information space, and involvement of Lithuanian institutions in improving security of Lithuania.


The U.S. security and defence experts from Atlantic Council and Heritage Foundation think tanks and the Congressional Research Service are visiting Lithuania as part of a joint project of the Ministry of National Defence and the Atlantic Council analytical centre of the United States, Enhancement of Security and the Fight Against Conventional and Hybrid Threats in North Eastern Europe.


The current visit is one of the activities scheduled by the project where U.S. experts familiarise with security situation in Lithuania and the region, development of Lithuania’s national defence capabilities and means of increasing resilience to cyber threats, and NATO and U.S. assurance measures in Lithuania and the region.


Other events in the projects include publications by Atlantic Council experts on the topic of the project a conference in Washington, and a wrap-up in Vilnius were insights and recommendations produced over the duration of the project will be presented in Vilnius. Lithuania seeks to update and solidify points of Lithuania’s security and defence in the U.S. political agenda, to obtain recommendations regarding provision of additional U.S. and NATO assurance measures in Lithuania, and filling in capability gaps.
