Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders on March 20-26, 2017


In the period from March 20 to 26 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled twice to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.


On March 24 NATO fighter aircraft identified and escorted one AN-26 of the Russian Federation flying without a flight plan and without using onboard transponder. The aircraft heading for the mainland of the Russian Federation away from Kaliningrad maintained radio contact with air traffic control centres.


On March 25 the NATO air policing fighters intercepted one Il-18 of the Russian Federation flying from mainland Russia towards Kaliningrad. The aircraft had a flight plan, its onboard transponder was switched on, and it maintained radio contact with air traffic control.
