Baltic Defence Ministers agreed on an easier movement of NATO forces

 

“NATO Allies understand the challenges brought by the changed security environment, therefore key NATO’s priority is its readiness to timely respond to threats of any type and to ensure collective defence in the entire Alliance territory,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis stated today at the NATO Defence Ministers meeting in Brussels. “Deployment of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence battalion near the Alliance’s eastern borders is not only a signal of allied solidarity and unity but also a real deterrent from a military point of view that enhances security of the region.”

On February 15-16 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will attend NATO Defence Ministers meeting in Brussels which will need to set the guidelines for further Alliance military activity and adaptation to respond to the threats emanating from the East and on the southern flank.

 On February 14 the Lithuanian Parliament ratified the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of the United States of America on defence cooperation, a document that was signed on behalf of the respective countries by U.S. Ambassador to Lithuania HE Anne Hall and Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis on 17 January 2017.

 “Increasing defence spending and agreement on common European security policy measures in the changed security environment are the most important issues that all European countries have to address,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said in the end of his formal visit in Germany on February 13 after meeting with representatives of the German Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministries, the Federal Chancellery and the Bundestag.

Sunday evening Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis arrived in Berlin and met with Minister of Defence of Germany Dr. Ursula von der Leyen.

 

This is the second meeting of the two Ministers in a week following formal welcoming of the German-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion in Rukla alongside the President of Lithuania HE Dalia Grybauskaitė on Tuesday.
