Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders on February 13-19, 2017

On February 13-19 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled twice to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On February 14 NATO fighter aircraft identified and escorted an Il-22 of the Russian Federation flying from mainland Russia towards Kaliningrad , and two Su-27 that were escorting the first aircraft. The Il-22 kept radio contact with air traffic control centres, its onboard transponder was on, but it had no flight plan. The two escorting Su-27s did not keep radio contact, did not use onboard transponders, and did not have flight plans.

In February 16 NATO air policing fighters identified and escorted and Il-22 flying from Kaliningrad to the mainland of the Russian Federation, and two Su-27 escorting it. The Il-22 had a flight plan, used onboard transponder, and maintained radio contact, while the two Su-27 met none of those criteria.
