Bundeswehr soldiers formally farewelled at Oberviechtach before deployment to Lithuania

On January 19 soldiers with the 122nd Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Bundeswehr were farewelled at a formal ceremony at homebase in Oberviechtach (Bavaria) ahead of deployment to Lithuania as of the end of January as the basis of a NATO forward presence battalion. FOR the following six months the soldiers will serve in Rukla, Lithuania. Later they will be joined by colleagues from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway.

On January 20 Danish Contingent was farewelled before deployment to Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Iraq. The Contingent includes a group of Lithuanian Armed Forces instructors. The Lithuanian soldiers will begin service in the area of operation in the first week of February.

 

The group of six Lithuanian military instructors is assigned to the Danish Contingent along with colleagues from Latvia and Estonia.

Lithuania is prepared to host NATO’s enhanced forward presence battalion

“The mission of the NATO enhanced forward presence battalion to be deployed in the end of January is defensive and is aimed at deterring Russia. Soldiers of the multinational German-led battalion will train in Lithuania alongside our troops, or defend Lithuania alongside units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and units additionally deployed by NATO allies in case of aggression against Lithuania,” Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras says.

Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Ambassador of the United States of America in Lithuania HE Anne Hall signed the agreement at the Ministry of National Defence on January 17.

 

“Let me congratulate everyone with what I see as a milestone in the strategic Lithuanian-U.S. security and defence partnership that we confirm with this agreement. We are interested to have permanent presence of U.S. forces and equipment in Lithuania, it is one of the key elements of our security,” Minister R.Karoblis said. According to Minister, the agreement lays out the fundamental conditions for such presence and reaffirms U.S. defence commitments to Lithuania. In its turn, Lithuania shall provide all conditions for the United States to keep the commitments.

Lithuania and the United States of America will further strengthen partnership and cooperation in security and defence area by signing a cooperation agreement. The document binding the signatory countries to uphold bilateral defence commitments will be endorsed by Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Ambassador of the United States of America in Lithuania HE Anne Hall at a meeting at the Ministry of National Defence on January 17.

On January 12 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller appointed late last year met in Vilnius. The first meeting the high-ranking NATO official and Minister R.Karoblis held focused on the security situation in the eastern flank of the Alliance and implementation of the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Warsaw.
