Lithuania remains committed to supporting Ukraine’s defence reform, Minister R.Karoblis says

“Lithuania will remain an active participant of Ukraine’s defence reform process prioritising assistance to the development of special operations forces and NCO corps reform,” Minister of National Defence R.Karoblis said at a meeting with Minister of Defence of Ukraine Army General in Kiev Stepan Poltorak on January 31.

The Ministers discussed security situation in Ukraine which remains tense because of the Russian aggression, its effect on Ukraine’s economy, and other relevant points of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. According to the Lithuanian Minister, Western states should continue the sanctions to Russia due to its aggression.

R. Karoblis expressed support to Ukrainian reforms in defence and other areas. “It is a difficult task to carry on with reforms at the same time as the country is at war,” R. Karoblis said. According to the Minister, Ukraine is achieving progress in its reforms but the pace must be kept and civilian democratic control must be ensured as the country reaches for its goals.

After the meeting the Ministers signed a declaration on further defence cooperation. Minister R.Karoblis also invited his Ukrainian counterpart to repay the visit in May.

Today Minister R. Karoblis also met with Vice Premier for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze. The minister offered Lithuania’s assistance in learning from Euro-Atlantic integration experience and expressed support to Ukraine’s participation in international initiatives for responding to hybrid threats.

The meetings with Secretary of National Security and Defence Council Oleksandr Turchynov and Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Army General Viktor Muzhenko addressed security situation in Ukraine and the recent developments in the eastern part of the country, progress of the defence reform, territorial defence, and other relevant matters.

Lithuania supports independence and territorial integrity, and Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations of Ukraine. For a considerable period of time cooperation with Ukraine has been one of the top Lithuanian foreign and security policy priorities.

Minister R.Karoblis travelled to Ukraine at the invitation of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine.

Tomorrow representatives of the Lithuanian and the Ukrainian ministries of defence will sign a Bilateral Cooperation Plan.
