On January 23-29 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States were scrambled four times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On January 30 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with Lithuanian soldiers during a visit to Yavoriv military training area in Ukraine where 16-strong group of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion are training Ukrainian colleagues side by side with NATO allies.

On January 30 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis leaves for a two-day visit in Ukraine. He is planned to meet with Minister of Defence Army General Stepan Poltorak, Vice Premier for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Secretary of National Security and Defence Council Oleksandr Turchynov, and Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Army General Viktor Muzhenko. At the meetings security situation in Ukraine and bilateral and multilateral cooperation are expected to be discussed.

“Commander of the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Christoph Huber and I have discussed the training calendar of Lithuanian and NATO soldiers for the first semester of this year, reviewed internal procedures, and agreed on some of the main activity coordination principles. It is wonderful to see units deployed to Lithuania so soon after the decisions being taken in Warsaw, they will strengthen the defence of our country and the Alliance together with our forces at the same time acting as a deterrent for a potential enemy,” Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Valdemaras Rupšys said following a coordination meeting on January 25 between himself, Commander of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade , and the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Commander in Rukla.

On January 24-26 soldiers of the Belgian Armed Forces arrive in Lithuania by ferry via Klaipėda Seaport. Over 100 troops with their weaponry and roughly 50 vehicles are the forward logistical group for the arrival of the rest of the NATO enhanced forward presence battalion deployed in Lithuania as of this year.

On January 24-26 arms control specialist with the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will carry out a verification visit of the 25th Motorised Rifle Brigade in Pskov in composition of a Latvian inspectors team. The international arms control inspectors team will carry out the verification visit in the Russian military unit in accordance to the Vienna Document 2011.

Bundeswehr soldiers formally farewelled at Oberviechtach before deployment to Lithuania

On January 19 soldiers with the 122nd Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Bundeswehr were farewelled at a formal ceremony at homebase in Oberviechtach (Bavaria) ahead of deployment to Lithuania as of the end of January as the basis of a NATO forward presence battalion. FOR the following six months the soldiers will serve in Rukla, Lithuania. Later they will be joined by colleagues from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway.
