Minister of Defence of Belgium to conduct a visit in Lithuania, meet with Belgian soldiers serving in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group


On November 24 Minister of Defence of Belgium Steven Vandeput and a delegation of Belgium’s Members of Parliament are conducting a visit in Lithuania. The guests will meet with Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces; Lithuania’s and Belgium’s Defence Ministers will hold a bilateral meeting. Then the Ministers will visit Belgian soldiers deployed in Lithuania as part of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Rukla.


During the bilateral meeting the Ministers are planned to discuss the security situation in the Baltic Sea region, results of the NATO Defence Ministers meeting and further work, new initiatives in the format of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy, bilateral defence cooperation of Lithuania and Belgium.


Approx. 100 soldiers of the 29th Logistics Battalion, Belgian Land Component have been serving in Lithuania as part of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group, since the beginning of the year. The eFP logistical company formed mainly by the Belgian troops ensures logistical support and support to operations of movement of units. To that end, the Belgian soldiers have their own equipment that they use to ensure mobility of the entire German-led NATO eFP Battle Group.


Belgium also is an active contributor to the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states. It was the first NATO member state to deploy capabilities to the mission back in 2004, four more rotations of the mission conducted from Šiauliai (Lithuania) and Amari (Estonia) followed. Soldiers of the Belgian Land Component, just like the rotational NATO forces, were deployed in Lithuania following the Russian annexation of Crimea in spring 2014, they were refining joint actions in Lithuania’s military training areas for several months as part of NATO assurance measures. Belgian troops and equipment also took part in multinational exercises in Lithuania numerous times.

Media representatives will be able to cover the protocol part of the Lithuanian and Belgian Defence Ministers’ meeting at the Ministry of National Defence, Žalgiris Hall (Totorių str. 25) on November 24, at 1130–1135 hrs (prior registration/accreditation is obligatory).


Media representatives are also invited to cover the Belgian Defence Minister’s visit in Rukla (prior registration/accreditation is obligatory).


Media representatives willing to cover the meeting of Lithuanian and Belgian Defence Ministers and to attend the event in Rukla are invited to register with the MoD Strategic Communication and Public Relations Department, e-mail: [email protected], until Thursday, November 23, 1200 hrs. Information required for registration: full name, represented media outlet, contacts (mobile phone number, e-mail address), to indicate the event (at the MoD or in Rukla) the registration request is applied for. Times of the event in Rukla will be sent to registered media representatives.


Freelance reporters and foreign media representatives will need accreditation given by the MoD Strategic Communication and Public Relations Department, e-mail: [email protected] Information required: filled out form, copies of a personal ID document and confirmation document from the media outlet.


Media representatives may be asked to present personal ID documents and press card on site.
