On August 1-7 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission over the Baltic states were scrambled once to intercept foreign aircraft flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Training Squadron will conduct a friendly visit to Lithuania

On August 8-11 the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Training Squadron will conduct a friendly port visit to Klaipėda as Lithuania and Japan marks the 25th anniversary of re-established diplomatic relations and further develops bilateral defence cooperation. The Training Squadron commanded by Rear Admiral Hidetoshi Iwasaki includes three ships and a crew of roughly 750 members of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF). This will be the first visit of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Training Squadron in Lithuania.

Poland’s rotational forces arrived for training in Lithuania

On August 2 rotational troops from Poland deployed in Lithuania for joint exercises and training. Roughly 130 Polish soldiers deployed from the 7th Mounted Rifle Battalion, 17th Mechanised Brigade, Polish Land Force. Through the first week of training they will be stationed at Duke Vaidotas Mechanised Infantry Battalion in Rukla. Later the troops will move to Alytus to train in Exercise Strong Hussar with military personnel of Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion. The polish soldiers have been deployed to Lithuania until the end of August.

Contribution of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to EU Operation Sophia increased

On August 2 a Lithuanian officer was deployed to the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean operation Sophia. The officer will join the Lithuanian representative who had been deployed in June to serve aboard Giuseppe Garibaldi, a light aircraft career of the Italian Navy. Both Lithuanian officers will serve until the end of the year. Lithuania also contributes one officer to Sophia operational headquarters in Rome (Italy).

In the period from July 25 to 31 no scrambles of the NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Baltic Air Policing Mission were triggered to intercept aircraft of the Russian Federation or other countries in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
