Lithuania to acquire a new batch of modernized G36 rifles and 40 mm launchers

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has signed an agreement on procurement of another batch of automatic rifles G-36 procurement with German company Heckler & Koch GmbH. The automatic rifles G-36 and under-barrel 40 mm HK269 grenade launchers Lithuania will acquire for the sum amounting to 12.5 million euros. All weapons are scheduled to be delivered to the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the course of 2017.

On August 31 in the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Šiauliai the exchange ceremony of the NATO military units conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States will be held. Portuguese Air Force soldiers in Šiauliai who protected Baltic airspace for four months will be replaced by France, a new lead nation of the Air Policing mission in the Baltic States. The French Air Force will carry out mission with four fighters “Mirage 2000”. France will be augmented by Germany from Estonia with jets “Eurofighter Typhoon”.

On August 28 four French Air Force fighters “Mirage 2000” which will conduct NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States for the next four months will land in the Lithuanian Air Force Air Base in Šiauliai. French soldiers will replace the Portuguese troops currently conducting the Air Policing Mission with four F-16 "Fighting Falcon" fighters.

Following decision taken in NATO summit in Warsaw to deploy a battalion in each of 3 Baltic States and Poland, a force generation conference took place in Vilnius on August 23-26. Representatives from Belgium, Croatia, Czech, France, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway and Germany, as framework nation, were discussing various issues of the multinational battalion.

On August 23-25 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas is conducting a formal visit in Kiev, Ukraine. On August 24 the Minister attended celebration of the 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, observed a military parade including roughly 30 members of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Honour Guard Company, and paid tribute to the victims of Maidan.

 

On August 23 the Defence Minister also met with the Deputy Prime Minister for European Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, and Minister of Defence of Ukraine Army General Stepan Poltorak to discuss security situation in Ukraine and the region, and the progress of Ukrainian defence reform.

The Honourable Katrina McFarland, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, or ASA (ALT), conducted a visit at the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania on August 23. The guest met with Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička, Director General for Capabilities and Armaments Colonel Darius Užkuraitis, and other representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The meeting addressed the ongoing close Lithuanian-U.S. defence cooperation and opportunities to keep expanding it.

On August 22 the contract of procuring infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) for the Lithuanian Armed Forces was signed at the Ministry of National Defence. 88 IFVs manufactured according to requirements set out by the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be bought for the sum of EUR 385.6 m.

 

The contract was endorsed by the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, managing directors of ARTEC GmbH, the Boxer IFV manufacturer, Stefan Lischka and Christoph Heuman, and OCCAR director Tim Rowntree.

Over past six months roughly 200 combat and medlift Mercedes-Benz GD vehicles, trucks, and other military vehicles were brought from the Netherlands to Lithuania to supplement and update the fleet of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. On August 18 a meeting of Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lithuania HE Bert van der Lingen was held in Kaunas to celebrate the successful defence cooperation between the two countries.
