National Centre for Cyber Security will be inaugurated in Vilnius

On July 12 the National Centre for Cyber Security will be inaugurated at its premises in the territory of the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, Vilnius.

 

“The National Centre for Cyber Security was established under the Ministry of National Defence a little more than a year ago, and expert personnel have achieved a lot in terms of strengthening cyber security of Lithuanian state institutions over the time,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas says ahead of the inauguration ceremony.

On July 7 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas departs for Warsaw to attend the NATO Summit on July 8 through 9. The Summit will focus on strengthening collective NATO defence and deterrence, further NATO’s contribution to the efforts of international community to project stability beyond the boundaries of Euro-Atlantic space, enhancement of cyber security, and closer cooperation between NATO and the European Union.

Lithuanian officers train in JEF exercise in the United Kingdom

From June 27 through July 10 three Lithuanian officers (one officer assigned to the headquarters and two operations and logistics specialists) attend Command Post Exercise (CPX) Joint Venture 2016 in the United Kingdom. The exercise tests the level of readiness of the Standing Joint Force Headquarters of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), including Lithuanian military personnel. Colonel Raimundas Vaikšnoras, Chief of the Operations Command, Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, observed the exercise and met with Lithuanian participants in the UK.

At noon of July 6 members of the Honour Guard Company representing the Lithuanian Land Force, Air Force, and Navy will hoist the national and the historical flags of Lithuania in Simonas Daukantas Square during celebration of Lithuania’s Statehood Day.

 

Alongside top leadership of Lithuania the event will be attended by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas, civilian and military representatives of the National Defence System.

6th shift of Lithuanian military instructors began service as part of Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine

On July 5 the 6th rotation of Lithuanian military instructors where deployed to deliver training in Ukraine. The 6th shift Lithuania provides comprises 16 professional military service soldiers with the Motorised Infantry Brigade Žemaitija, Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion, and the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Motorised Infantry Battalion.

In the period from June 27 to July 3 NATO fighter aircraft conducting NATO Air Policing tasks in the Baltic states were scrambled three times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Lithuanian soldiers commence standby for a European Union Battle Group

On July 1 a company of Birutė Uhlan Battalion began standby for a European Union Battle Group (EU BG). Lithuanians will carry out the six-month standby together with colleagues from Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The core of the EU BG is composed of three infantry maneuver companies – two British and one Lithuanian.

On July 3-4 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will take part in Almedalen Week in Visby, Gotland (Sweden) which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the reclaimed Baltic states’ independence. Sweden recognised the independence of Lithuania on 27 August 1991.

 

Sweden’s and Baltic political figures, economists, journalists, and representatives of NGOs will discuss Baltic-Swedish cooperation over the past 25 years, and current defence, economic and energy security challenges at the event.
