Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders on July 18-24, 2016

In the period from July 18 to 24 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission over the Baltics were scrambled once to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On July 18 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States identified and escorted a Russian Tu-134 military passenger aircraft bound for Kaliningrad flying from the mainland of the Russian Federation, and two Russian Su-27 fighters flying from Kaliningrad to meet the Tu-134 and back. Onboard transponder of the passenger aircraft was turned off but the crew maintained radio communication with air traffic control centres and had a flight plan pre-filed, while the fighters did not have flight plans, did not maintain radio communication and did not turn on radio transponders.
