On May 24 Minister of National Defence took part in discussions on NATO enlargement at the Georgian Defence and Security Conference in Tbilisi (Georgia).

 

The Conference addressed key security issues faced by Georgia and the Baltic Sea region. Minister J.Olekas delivered an address at a panel on NATO Enlargement: If? The Minister of Defence of Estonia addressed NATO Enlargement: When? at a corresponding panel in the context of Georgia’s aspirations to a full-fledged NATO membership.

On May 23 Ministers of Defence Of the Baltic States, Juozas Olekas (Lithuania), Hannes Hanso (Estonia), and Raimonds Bergmanis (Latvia), agreed concrete practical steps that would be taken in preparation to host enhanced forward-deployed NATO forces in the Baltics during a meeting of the Baltic Ministerial Committee in Kuressaare (Estonia). The decision to enhance Allied forward presence in the region is expected to be taken at the NATO Defence Ministers meeting and endorsed at the specified and endorsed at the NATO Summit in Warsaw.

 

The Ministerial Committee signed a communication.

On May 16-22 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled 9 times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On May 23 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will meet with his Baltic counterparts, Minister of Defence of Estonia Hannes Hanso and Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds, as the Baltic Ministerial Committee in Kuressaare, Estonia.

 

The Baltic Defence Ministers will discuss security situation in the region, preparations for the oncoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, presence of allied forces in the Baltic region, assistance to Georgia and Ukraine, and other security and defence matters.

On May 20 largest special forces Exercise Flaming Sword 2016 in the region this year wrapped up. At the exercise soldiers of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces alongside allies practised operating in hybrid and full-blown war.

 

For three weeks the Exercise held by the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces trained Lithuanian as well as British, Danish, Georgian, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Swedish, U.S. and Ukrainian soldiers to complete operations in various phases of war.

On May 17 international table top exercise (TTX) Critical Energy Infrastructure Protection organised by the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence (ENSEC COE).

 

During the four days of the exercise roughly 60 experts from 12 countries will analyse different scenarios with an aim of increasing NATO capacity to protect critical energy infrastructure in the Baltic region.

On May 9-15 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States were scrambled twice from Šiauliai Airbase to identify and escort aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in international airspace above the Baltic Sea.

SNMG1 ships on a visit in Klaipėda

On May 16 through 18 two ships of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) frigate ESPS Alvaro de Bazan (Spain) and HMS Iron Duke (UK) conduct a visit to Klaipėda Seaport.

 

During the visit SNMG1 Commander Admiral Jose Enrique Delgado (Spain) and commanding officers of the ships will meet with the mayor of Klaipėda and Commander of the Lithuanian Navy. Also, tribute will be paid to the soldiers of the United Kingdom killed during World War I and buried in Vitė Cemetery.

On May 13-15 shore phase of Operation Open Spirit 2016 took place in Klaipėda. Commanders of participating foreign ships and ship units as well as commander of the countermeasures operation paid visits to Klaipėda City Council, met with Commander Lithuanian Navy, and together with Vice Minister of National Defence, Ambassador of France in Lithuania, Lithuanian soldiers, crew of French vessel Sagittaire on port visit in Klaipėda attended commemorative ceremony for French war prisoners who perished while hand digging the King Wilhelm Channel.

Scouts from Luxembourg will train in Lithuania

On May a reconnaissance platoon from Luxembourg arrived to train in Lithuania. The new guests will join the 291st Infantry Battalion, Franco-German Brigade, German Armed Forces, training in Lithuania since early April. Roughly 40 Luxembourg scouts brought their modern equipment and weaponry for practising various reconnaissance tasks side by side with colleagues from Lithuania and other allies, and will take part in Exercise Saber Strike 2016 and Exercise Iron Wolf 2016 in June.
