"The reinforced US military presence in Europe and foreseen increased funding of European Reassurance Initiative certainly opens up possibilities for much faster reaction of the United States, the reinforcement of forces in Europe in the event of any crisis and it significantly contributes to the reinforced Alliance’s deterrence posture in the face of current threats. Of course, our security will be reinforced this way as well. Presence of the Allies in our territory, our region is an essential safety guarantee for us," Mr. Juozas Olekas, the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence, said while commenting on the US decision to increase its military presence in the Eastern Europe and deploy an additional fully-manned Army brigade. Continuous rotations of the brigade elements will be started in early 2017.

3rd Mechanised Infantry Company of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion with assigned units will be on standby for the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJFT) in composition of the UK-led Land Force Element as of the beginning of 2017. The Lithuanian infantry company will be assigned to the Danish Army Battalion while a National Support Element will be ensuring its logistical provision.

More than 600 rotational German troops will arrive to train in Lithuania this year

Strengthening NATO agreed assurance measures in the Baltic region, more than 600 rotational German troops and several hundred military vehicles will arrive to Lithuania by several stages to conduct joint exercises and training. On March 30-April 9 the first group of German troops and vehicles - nearly 300 German Armed Forces French-German Infantry Brigade 291 Infantry Battalion soldiers with more than 150 multi-purpose military vehicles are arriving to Lithuania.

From March 21 to 27 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States were scrambled once to identify and intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On March 29 Lithuania will mark the 12 anniversary of NATO membership. Our country has become the member of the strongest defence Alliance in the world on 29 March 2004 upon depositing the instruments of ratification of the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington. NATO membership is the foundation of the security policy of Lithuania.

 

“I congratulate all soldiers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, servants of the National Defence System, cadets, volunteers, reserve soldiers, founders of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, partisans, riflemen, and the entire nation of Lithuania on the occasion of Lithuania’s NATO accession,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas says.

Tuesday, March 23. LUBLIN, Poland – Officers and non-commissioned officers of Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade conduct a new challenging battle staff training to exercise ability to plan and perform Stability Operations.

 

This is a two-month long training which aims at synchronizing procedures and developing interoperability of Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian components of the Brigade, while executing Stability Operation.

The Ministry of National Defence stands in solidarity with Belgium that has been hit by terror attacks. March 24 has been declared a day of mourning and flags of NATO and the European Union have been lowered by the Ministry of National Defence HQ in tribute to the victims of the terror attacks.

March 24, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas welcomed members of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) to the Gaižiūnai training area, Rukla of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The ambassadors of NATO member states were on a two day visit to Lithuania to familiarise with security situation in the region, discuss NATO's adaptation to the changed security environment.

During bilateral political consultations in Moldova from March 22-24 representatives of the Lithuanian and the Moldovan Ministries of Defence signed the two countries’ Bilateral Cooperation Plan 2016. Lithuanian delegation visiting Moldova was headed by Director of International Cooperation and Operations Department Robertas Šapronas.

The conference has pulled together renown experts of international security.
