Lithuania and the United States step up cooperation in logistics

On January 28, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics of the United States Alan F. Estevez discussed the host nation support and infrastructure Lithuania provides for allied forces deployed here at a meeting in Lithuania. 

 

“Only a presence of allied troops that makes sense in military terms does send a strong message of deterrence. In our estimation, the key elements of deterrence are allied presence in the region and prepositioning of equipment and weaponry. We are already prepared to host an allied battalion unit and to render full host nation support, i.e. equipment, infrastructure and training conditions, “Minister J.Olekas said at the meeting.

On January 27, the Embassy of Lithuania in Kiev, currently also operating as the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Ukraine, summoned the Ukrainian media, renowned journalists and analysts from Ukrainian NGOs for an informal meeting.

 

“2016 is a critical year for Ukraine. It is vital to clearly define Ukraine’s aspirations, advance implementation of key reforms, and seek as great public awareness on security policy, European and Euro-Atlantic integration as possible in the context of Ukraine’s integration into the EU and the upcoming NATO Summit. Lithuania will remain Ukraine’s supporter through bilateral relations, active efforts in the framework of the European Union, and performance at the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Ukraine,” Ambassador of Lithuania in Ukraine HE Marius Janukonis said.

On the 19th of January staff of the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) Lithuania visited the Vilnius Rotary Club following an invitation from the Vilnius Rotary Club President, architect Augis Gučas.

 

NFIU Commander Col. Jakob Larsen thanked the President for his invitation saying "The military must work closely with the society, civil populations, business professionals and other organizations, because without your support, your understanding and devotion, not a single country’s army will be strong and able to carry out their Mission. Therefore, I am very pleased to be invited to attend the Vilnius Rotary Club meeting, and I will introduce to you what NFIU Lithuania does. First of all, I would like to thank the Lithuanian people for the great support to the development of the NFIU and I would also like to thank for the support of the National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas, my colleagues, the Joint Staff, and Brigadier General Vilmantas Tamošaitis."

On January 25 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and his Polish and Ukrainian counterparts, respectively, Minister of National Defence Antoni Macierewicz and Minister of Defence General of the Army Stepan Poltorak inaugurated headquarters of the joint Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade (LITPOLUKBRIG) at a ceremony in Lublin.

 

The three Defence Ministers also discussed the progress and prospects of the LITPOLUKRBRIG project, security situation in Ukraine and Ukraine’s defence reforms, and perspectives of further cooperation between the three nations.

From 18 to 24 January fighter jets conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States were scrambled once to identify and intercept aircraft of the Russian Federation flying near the borders of the Baltic States.

 

On January 19 NATO fighter jets scrambled from Šiauliai Airbase to identify and intercept an IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft of the Russian Federation. Bound for the mainland of the Russian Federation from Kaliningrad Oblast over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, the aircraft was flying without a pre-filed flight plan, with its onboard transponder turned off and did not maintain radio communication. A TU-134 military passenger plane, also flying without a pre-filed flight plan, with a switched-off its onboard transponder and not maintaining radio communication, was identify and intercepted during the same scramble.

“I am certain that strong relations between our countries is the foundation of the security in our region and I am happy that security and defence cooperation between our countries has always been developed in the spirit of openness and confidence, and mutual support,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said at the meeting with Minister of National Defence of Poland Antoni Macierewicz in Lublin on January 25.

On January 25 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Minister of National Defence of Poland Antoni Macierewicz and Minister of Defence of Ukraine Army General Stepan Poltorak will inaugurate headquarters of the newly established joint Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade (LITPOLUKRBRIG).

 

The ceremony will officially mark that the LITPOLUKRBRIG HQ based in Lublin has achieved Initial Operational Capability, i.e. 90% of the staff personnel has already been composed, key documentation for the operation of the staff is in place, and the conditions for the staff and the brigade to operate are provided.

“The EU agenda focuses on security and defence, including hybrid warfare, increasingly more. It is important to maintain the EU focus on security and defence issues at the same level in the future, however, to also avoid any duplication of NATO,” Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr Vaidotas Urbelis said at the informal EU Defence Policy Directors meeting in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) on January 21-22.

On January 24-25 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička will take part in the 9th Europe-Ukraine Forum in Lodz, Poland. The Forum will pull together roughly 500 prominent politicians, businessmen, journalists, international relations experts from the European Union, Ukraine, Russia, the United States and other neighbour countries.

On January 21 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed European security situation and assurance measures in the region in the context of the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw at a meeting with Deputy Chair of the Defence Committee of the Bundestag Karl A. Lamers and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lithuania Jutta Schimitz. Other pointes addressed at the meeting were bilateral cooperation and other current security and defence matters.
