Lithuanians are particularly positive towards NATO allies, polls suggest

Citizens of Lithuania have a very positive attitude towards NATO, notice Lithuanian soldiers in military uniform more frequently, support sending Lithuanian troops abroad on international operations, and back the increase of defence budget. These observations are based on a public opinion poll commissioned by the Ministry of National Defence and carried out in December 2015 by public opinion polling company RAIT.

A new unit will be established within the Lithuanian Land Force as of 1 January 2016. Motorised Infantry Brigade Žemaitija is established in consideration of the necessity to strengthen Lithuania’s defence capabilities.

 

“Conscious of the fact that we would simply have no time for forming new military units in the event of a potential threat, we seek to draw the peacetime structure of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to wartime structure which is the basis of Lithuania’s defence plans. The establishment of the second motorised infantry brigade in Western Lithuania is another step on the road of strengthening defence capacity of our country,” Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas says.

On 1 January 2016 roughly 700 Lithuanian soldiers with designated infantry equipment and vehicles will begin standby for NATO and EU rapid response forces.

 

Units and soldiers of the Lithuanian Land Force, Lithuanian Special Operations Forces, Logistics Command, Deployable Communications and Information Systems Module, Military Police, and Military Medical Service will be on standby for different components of the NATO Response Force (NRF) in 2016. Mine Countermeasures vessel of the Lithuanian Navy, LNV Skalvis (M53), with crew will join also the NATO Response Force in the second semester of 2016.

On December 21-27 fighter jets conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States were scrambled twice to intercept foreign military aircraft in international airspace above the Baltic Sea. Aircraft stationed in both, airbases in Amari (Estonia) and Šiauliai (Lithuania), were involved.

Seven Lithuanian troops deployed to NATO's air defence operation in Turkey

On December 21 deployment ceremony was held for 7 troops leaving for Turkey to take part in NATO's air defence operation called Active Fence as the Deployable Communications and Information Systems Module (DCISM).

 

During the deployment, the Lithuanian soldiers will be responsible for plugging in the Patriot missile batteries to the NATO command and communication network and proper functioning of the network in the southern part of Turkey.

From December 7 to 20 NATO fighter aircraft performing air policing tasks over the Baltic States were scrambled 11 times to intercept aircraft flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On December 15 General of the Army Stepan Poltorak, Minister of Defence of Ukraine, present the Ukrainian Armed Forces decorations for two Lithuanian military instructors, Sergeant Jurijus Dubosas and Sergeant Olegas Magas, for the contribution to the training of Ukrainian troops.

Joint Communique of the Ministerial Committee of the Baltic States, signed on 14 December, 2015 in Vilnius

 

At a meeting in Vilnius on December 14 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Minister of Defence of Estonia Hannes Hanso, and  Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Bergmanis as the Baltic Defence Committee agreed on a common strategy in preparation for the upcoming NATO Heads of State and Government meeting in Warsaw next year where decisions essential for the security of the Baltic region are expected to be made.

 

The Baltic Defence Committee agreed to coordinate their actions while doing operational defence planning at national and NATO levels. It was also agreed to continue rendering EUR 5 million of Host Nation Support to allied forces deployed to the Baltic States, with the sum being shared equally among the three host nations.

On December 14 Defence Ministers of the Baltic States, Juozas Olekas of Lithuania, Hannes Hanso of Estonia, and Raimonds Bergmanis of Latvia, met with Minister of Defence of Ukraine General of the Army Stepan Poltorak during their visit in Kyiv. The meeting was also attended by the Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defence of Poland, Tomasz Szatkowski.

On December 14 Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Juozas Olekas will meet with Minister of Defence of Latvia Hannes Hanso and acting Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds in Vilnius.

 

The Baltic Defence Ministers, or the Baltic Defence Committee, will discuss security situation in the region, preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, presence of allied forces in the Baltic region, and other security and defence issues.
