While on a formal visit in the United States, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with U.S. Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter on November 17 in Washington. U.S Secretary of Defence reiterated the long-term plans for U.S. presence in the region and Lithuania. “We are certain that the continued financing of the European Reassurance Initiative will allow the United States to maintain its troops and the equipment planned to be prepositioned in Lithuania, and to continue strengthening its presence in Lithuania,” U.S. Secretary of Defence said.

On November 17 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička and his colleagues discussed security challenges and the actions that the European Union can possibly take in the fight against terrorism at the European Union Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels.

 

“Lithuania strongly condemns the Paris terror acts that has claimed lives of peaceful citizens and targeted European values. We stand by France in this hour of grief and we are ready to contribute to the fight against terrorism on a bilateral or collective basis,” M. Velička said at the meeting.

Data on interceptions of vessels and aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders from November 9 to November 15, 2015

On November 9-15 fighter aircraft of the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states performed one A-Scramble to intercept a foreign aircraft in international airspace above the Baltic Sea. On November 13 NATO fighter jets intercepted an IL-20 electronic intelligence aircraft of the Russian Federation heading for Kaliningrad Oblast and then returning to the mainland of the Russian Federation. The aircraft was flying in accordance with a pre-filed flight plan, its pilots were not using onboard transponders but maintained radio communication with air traffic control centre.

On November 16 military and civilian personnel of the Ministry of National Defence observed minute of silence to honour the victims of the terror attacks in Paris and as a sign of solidarity with the people of France.

On November 13 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Valička met with Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defence of Romania Valeriu Nicut while on a visit in the country.

 

While discussing defence cooperation between Lithuania and Romania, representatives of the two countries agreed to send more soldiers to joint exercises and discussed the possibilities of strengthening the cooperation by also involving Moldova, and other initiatives.

“Today the National Joint Host Nation Support Coordination Committee comprised by representatives from across the Lithuanian ministries trained for the first time. The aim of this exercise, or should I say, this discussion, was to talk over the action we would take in case the security situation changed and a decision was made to deployed the NATO Response Force to Lithuania,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas commented on the results of the meeting of the National Joint Host Nation Support Coordination Committee held at Exercise Baltic Host 2015 in Lithuania.

On November 14-22 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will go to the United States and Canada for a formal visit.

 

Minister is expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Ashton Carter to discuss security situation, and threats, and the assurance measures in our region agreed by NATO on November 17 during the trip. Other points for discussion are expected to be U.S.-Lithuanian cooperation in the area of defence acquisition, deployment to multinational operations and exercises and other areas of bilateral security and defence cooperation. Minister is expected to have meetings with Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army General Mark Milley and Chief of the National Guard Bureau General Frank J. Grass on the same day.

New rotation of Lithuanian soldiers is ready to head for the Somali coast

A new rotation of the Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD) bound for the European Union-led counter-piracy and armed robbery at sea operation, EU NAVFOR - Operation ATALANTA, off the coast of Somalia completed their pre-deployment training in November. The unit formed by 16 members of the Lithuanian Navy and the Military Medical Service will be deployed from December 2015 till March 2016 succeeding the current AVPD deployed from August till December to protect a World Food Programme-chartered vessel carrying humanitarian aid to Somalia via the Indian Ocean.

On November 13 the National Joint Host Nation Support Coordination Committee will for the first time convene at regional exercise Baltic Host 2015. At the meeting presided over by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas representatives from different ministries of Lithuania will train procedures of accepting NATO forces deployed in case of a crisis and meet with Commander of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) Lieutenant General Tim Evans.
