Data on interceptions of vessels and aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders from 20 to 27 September, 2015

On September 21-27 NATO Baltic Air Policing fighter jets were scrambled four times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Three of the four interceptions completed last week were triggered off by a Russian IL-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft.

Two of the IL-20 flights in international airspace were carried out in accordance with a pre-filed flight plan, with switched-off onboard transponder and in communication with air traffic control centres, while the third flight was conducted without a flight plan, with switched-off onboard transponder, and without maintaining radio communication with air traffic control centres.

The fourth interception during the period concerned a Russian SU-27 fighter aircraft and an AN-26 transport aircraft, both flying without having pre-filed flight plans and without using onboard transponders but in communication with air traffic control centres.
