Lithuania and Belarus will exchange visits of arms control inspectors

On October 12-14 arms control inspectors of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will carry out visits in Belarus, while arms control inspectors of the Belarusian Armed Forces will conduct visits in Lithuania on October 14-16. Representatives of both countries will carry out verifications visits in each other’s military units on the basis of the bilateral Lithuanian-Belarusian Agreement on Additional Confidence- and Security-Building Measures and the Vienna Document 2011 of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The procurement contract for acquisition of self-propelled PzH2000 howitzers for the Lithuanian Armed Forces having been signed by the Ministries of Defence o Germany and Lithuania on 29 September, representatives of Lithuanian and German militaries are already holding consultations on the ways of integrating the new capability into the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

On September 28-29 Chief of Defence of Italy General Claudio Graziano made a formal visit to Lithuania at the invitation of Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas. On 29 September General C. Graziano met with Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas, and representatives from the Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

“We are deeply grateful to Italy for its deployment to the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states, for the officer assigned to the NATO headquarters operating in Lithuania, and for the support rendered to the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Lithuania,” J.Olekas thanked Italy for the contributions to the security measures in our region at the meeting.

On September 29 a contract on procuring PzH2000 self-propelled howitzers from the German Armed Forces was endorsed at the Ministry of National Defence. The contract was signed by MoD Director General for Capabilities and Armaments Colonel Darius Užkuraitis and Head of Armament Department of the Federal Ministry of Defence Wilfried Georg. Commander of the Logistics Command Colonel Sigitas Mundris signed the contract on behalf of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the recipient of the equipment. The contract was endorsed in the presence of Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Ambassador of Germany in Lithuania HE Jutta Schmitz.

NATO air capabilities will train in the Baltic skies

On 29 and 30 September the Lithuanian Air Force Base at Šiauliai hosts the 22nd NATO-led Baltic Region Training Event (BRT XXII).

 

The BRTE XXII will train the current rotations of the NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic States: four Gripen JAS-39 fighter aircraft of the Hungarian Air Force operated from Šiauliai Air Base and four Eurofighter Typhoon jets of the German Air Forces operated from Amari Air Base in Estonia. The training event will also involve the C-27J Spartan of the Lithuanian Air Force, air assets from Poland, Norway, and NATO partner countries – Sweden and Finland. The training aircraft will be mid-air refuelled by a U.S. E-3A aircraft while a British Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) E-3D aircraft will provide additional command and control.

On September 28-October 1 an international team of arms control inspectors, including an arms control inspector from the Republic of Belarus, headed by representatives of the Swiss Confederation will carry out inspection of a specified area in line with regulations of the Vienna Document 2011 of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

On September 21-27 NATO Baltic Air Policing fighter jets were scrambled four times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

 

Three of the four interceptions completed last week were triggered off by a Russian IL-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft.
