Last German soldiers departed from Lithuania

On June 16 last members of the 92nd Jaeger Battalion of the Bundeswehr deployed in Lithuania for combined training  left for home. As part of the agreed NATO measures of deterrence over 200 German soldiers were conducting combined training and exercises for three months with soldiers from Lithuania and other NATO allies.

Lithuania commemorates the victory in the Battle of Durbė

Keeping alive the tradition to celebrate the most significant victories of Lithuania’s warriors, the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Palace of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes co-organised a commemoration of the Battle of Durbė on July 13 in Vilnius.

 

A theatricalised celebration was performed in Cathedral Square by the Honour Guard Company, members of the General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion fired a historical cannon in a salute, and members of Vilkatlakiai Ancient Balts’ Fights Brethren brought back to life episodes of Lithuanians fighting crusaders if only for a short time. Also, by tradition when commemorating history-making victories the historical flag of Vytis (Lithuanian for “the chaser off”) was flown on the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

From July 7 till 12 NATO air policing fighter jets protecting the Baltic states’ airspace where scrambled once to intercept aircraft flying in international airspace above the Baltic Sea. No violations of Lithuania’s airspace were identified.

On 9 July Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas congratulated Raimonds Bergmanis on his appointment as the new Minister of Defence of Latvia.

 

“Please accept my sincerest congratulations on your appointment as a Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia. Current challenges and threats around our region suggest that the position of defence minister is and will remain a challenging one but also rewarding at the same time as it provides with the possibility to contribute to the security and prosperity of our countries”, the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence writes in the letter to his new Latvian counterpart.

The NATO Force Integration Unit which will be opened in Lithuania will be commanded by Colonel (Danish Army) Jakob Søgård Larsen with Lieutenant Colonel (Lithuanian Land Force) Mindaugas Petkevičius second in command. Col. J. S. Larsen will officially come into office as of August 1.

 

“The fact that we are host to a NATO Force Integration Unit in Lithuania is an instance of the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Wales put into practice and yet another demonstration of NATO presence in Lithuania,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said at the NFIU Open Doors Event at the headquarters of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Vilnius where the new multinational headquarters will soon be inaugurated.

„On 9 July Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, while making comment to the media on the ongoing project of procurement of Infantry Fighting Vehicles by the Lithuanian Armed Forces, informed that the market analysis had already been conducted.

 

 „The Lithuanian Chief of Defence has presented his military advice as well. The decision which producer will be selected to start negotiations on the Infantry Fighting Vehicles with will be made in the autumn.  The decision will be made public, “ the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence said.

Lithuanian military instructors will train Ukrainian soldiers

Lithuania is deploying 4 military instructors of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to train local military personnel alongside U.S. troops in Ukraine. The soldiers deployed to area of operations and will begin preparations for completing their assignment.

 

“Deployment of Lithuanian military instructors to Ukraine contributes to the enhancement and reform of the country’s armed forces and thus builds on the assistance measures already rendered to Ukraine,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said.

NATO Force Integration Unit to open in Vilnius

On July 9 the progress made in the establishment of a NATO headquarters, the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Vilnius, its leadership, tasks and organisation will be presented to national defence leadership, foreign defence attaches in Lithuania, and media at the headquarters of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Vilnius. The guests will tour the premises where the multinational headquarters is to be based. The NFIU is expected to be officially inaugurated this autumn.

On July 7 Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army General Raymond Odierno visited Lithuania.

 

President of the Republic of Lithuania HE Dalia Grybauskaitė presented the U.S. General with a state award, the Cross of Commander of the Order for Merits to Lithuania, in recognition of his extraordinary merits for developing and fostering bilateral relations and outstanding merits in military matters.

 

General Odierno also met with leaderships of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces, and observed a combined Lithuanian-U.S. training exercise at the Gaižiūnai Training Area (Jonava distr.) featuring an airborne operation conducted from UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters as well as other combined actions of Lithuanian and U.S. troops.
