LNS Žemaitis, Skalvis and Kuršis took part in the international naval exercise BALTOPS 15

From June 5 through 18 the LNS Žemaitis (P11) patrol boat and the Skalvis (M53) and the Kuršis (M54) mine countermeasures vessels took part in the international exercise BALTOPS 15 in the Baltic Sea.

 

Mine countermeasures vessels, of which there were two on Lithuania’s behalf, were responsible for ensuring sea paths cleared from mines for warships in combat support role during the main mine countermeasures phase of the exercise. Lithuanian MCM vessels the Skalvis and the Kuršis, both assigned to the Baltic Naval Squadron (BALTRON) and under command of Lieutenant Commander Audrius Venckūnas and Lieutenant (Navy) Aleksandr Černov respectively, guided other participating vessels across a mine filed.

Media representatives are invited to attend Distinguished Visitors and Media Day of Exercise Saber Strike 15 on June 18 at the Gaižiūnų Training Area (Jonava District).

 

The event will present military equipment and weaponry used by Lithuanian and allied forces during the exercise and exercise results achieved so far.

NATO Defence College delegation paid a visit to Lithuania

On June 17-18 a delegation of the NATO Defence College (NDC) led by NDC Commandant Major General Janusz Bojarski (Polish Air Force). The delegation including roughly 100 members, both students and members of NDC academic community, came to Lithuania as part of a study tour in Eastern European countries. The objective of the tour is to provide an opportunity for the delegation to familiarise with security situation, plans of building defence capacity and challenges in the visited countries.

On June 18 the Saber Strike flag was formally lowered at the Gaižiūnai Training Area marking the end of the portion of the international exercise in Lithuania.

 

President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas, co-directors of the exercise Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Major General Almantas Leika and Deputy Chief of Staff, USAREUR, Major General Mark McQueen and other distinguished visitors were in attendance at the closing ceremony at the Gaižiūnų Training Area.

Sexual orientation does not interfere with service in the military

The Ministry of National Defence expresses its official position regarding the possible discrimination of homosexual citizens willing to join military service as expressed in the media.

 

“No law or order applicable to the national defence system includes anything apt to interpretation and discriminatory with regard to sexual orientation. Both heterosexual and homosexual citizens are eligible for service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Sexual orientation does not constitute a factor of ineligibility,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas says.

A bilateral agreement to embed the U.S. military presence and the implementation of the assurance measures in Lithuania

On June 17 the Government of the Republic of Lithuania agreed to the ratification of the agreement with the Government of the United States of America which defines U.S. military presence in the military territories of Lithuania. The agreement also stipulates prepositioning and stationing of U.S. military equipment, weaponry and vehicles in Lithuania and enhancement of the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ infrastructure on U.S. funding. The agreement will come into force upon an exchange of diplomatic notes between Lithuania and the U.S. and will be extendable with the initial term in effect of two years.

June 16, at a meeting with outgoing Ambassador of Japan in Lithuania HE Kazuko Shiraishi Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas thanked her for the enhancement of cooperation between Japan and Lithuania in defence sector.

 

Minister J.Olekas stated that academic exchange, expert consultation on security and defence subject-matter and cyber defence and energy security remained the key areas of Lithuania’s cooperation with Japan.

June 16, as tensions regarding the security situation in the region persists, Commander U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Phillip M. Breedlove conducted a visit to the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai. At a meeting met with Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas the guest discussed the course of the implementation of the NATO Readiness Action Plan, and the additional measures the security situation around the Alliance called for.

On June 16 Commander U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Phillip M. Breedlove will make a visit to the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai. The guest will view the air base facilities, meet with Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas and Italian an Norwegian air personnel currently conducting the NATO Baltic Air policing Mission.

From June 8 to 16 NATO Baltic Air Policing fighter jets protecting the Baltic airspace from Šiauliai Airbase were scrambled 4 times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation approaching the Lithuanian border.
