![]() In case the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania imposes a 9-month Continuous Initial Mandatory Military Service instead of the currently approved mode of initial mandatory military service, the 12-week long Basic Military Training, it would follow the same principle of draft as is valid now. In the first place, young people are expected to join the service voluntarily. In case a sufficient number of voluntary conscripts have not turned out, mandatory conscription would be implemented. |

Lithuanian military concluded one more mission in Afghanistan 2015.02.27
![]() As the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan will be pulled out after running for 10 years as of this the 1st of March, 2015, by decision of the Lithuanian Government, the Protection Team of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan ended their tour of duty on February 26 and returned to Lithuania. The Protection Team was deployed in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, throughout the ten years of operation. |

![]() Roughly 250 soldiers from the company of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Division, U.S. Army, and the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion are training at Exercise Joint Punch at the Gaižiūnų Training Area (Pabradė) this week. The key exercise objectives are to put to test and improve interoperability of allied units in offensive, defensive, security and stabilisation operations. |

![]() On February 20 at a meeting with Amir Maimon, the first Ambassador of Israel designated to Lithuania, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas underscored that opening of the Embassy of Israel in Vilnius would strengthen bilateral relations, including in the area of defence. The Embassy was opened on 26 January 2015.
At the meeting the Lithuanian and Israeli officials discussed the situation in Ukraine, and threats of terrorism in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. |
