Minister J.Olekas invited Turkey to join in the NATO reassurance measures in the Baltic region

At a meeting with Minister of Defence of Turkey Ismet Yilmaz on January 29 Minister invited Turkey to join in the NATO reassurance measures in the Baltic region. “We invite you to deploy Turkey’s military personnel to Lithuania and take part in combined training and exercises, as well as to reinforce the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission,” Minister of National Defence J.Olekas said.

On January 28 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička will deliver an announcement in a session on the distinctive NATO-Ukraine partnership at an international conference NATO and Ukraine: Perspectives and Possibilities during his visit in Kyiv.

 

Later Defence Vice Minister and Foreign Minister of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius will take part in the ceremony of transferring the functions of the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Ukraine to the Lithuanian Embassy for 2015-2016.

On January 29 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will conduct a formal visit to Turkey and meet with Ismet Yilmaz, Defence Minister of the country. The Ministers will discuss security situation in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, implementation of the NATO decisions taken at the Wales Summit, contributions to multinational operations and other points of cooperation.

Lithuanian military personnel suffered no injuries in the suicide bomber attack in Kabul

On January 25 at around 6.00 a.m. (local time) a truck blew up at the gates of Kabul International Airport, an incident which is thought to be a suicide bomber attack.

 

Lithuanian military personnel were not injured in the incident.

On January 19-25 NATO fighter jets conducting the Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled three times: all the three interceptions involved the IL-20 military reconnaissance aircraft of the Russian Federation that was flying over the international waters of the Baltic Sea near the borders of the Baltic States without using its onboard transponder but maintaining radio communication with air traffic control centre. In two cases out of the whole of three the Russian aircraft was travelling according to a pre-filed flight plan.

“We have managed to achieve what we have been aiming at: the NATO Military Committee agreed to establish multinational headquarters in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. This is the piece of military advice the Military Committee will convey to the North Atlantic Council as soon as next month,” Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas said after returning from Brussels after the NATO Military Committee meeting of January 21-22.
