New Statute on Use of Military Force will allow to immediately use Armed Forces in response to non-conventional threats in peacetime

On 16 December the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania adopted the project of the amendment to the Statute on Use of Combat Weaponry in the National Defence System (changed to Statute on Use of Military Force) along with the amendments of other related laws.

On December 8-14, NATO air policing fighters protecting Baltic airspace took off 21 times to intercept Russian aircraft flying at the Baltic States’ borders.

 

It is the largest number of both reaction flights per week and biggest so far observed Russian military activity in the airspace in the vicinity of the Baltic States - almost 80 aircraft have been intercepted and identified next to the Baltic air space within a week, some of them were intercepted several times. With the exception of a few aircraft, the majority of them had their transponders turned off.

SNMCMG1 led by Lithuanian officer finished active duty and will continue standby in Klaipėda Seaport

Upon completion of the active deployment phase with NATO Response Force, Lithuanian Naval Ship LNS Jotvingis, a flag ship of Standing NATO Mine Counter Measures Group One (SNMCMG1), is returning to Klaipėda, Lithuania. Lithuanian Navy Officer Commander Giedrius Premeneckas will continue to command SNMCMG1 from this ship, up to the end of January 2015.

 

LNS Jotvingis is due to berth in Klaipėda Harbor on 17 December and will be accompanied by the two of eight Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 ships – ENS Talivaldis (Latvia) and LVNS Sakala (Estonia). The other ships of the group have already returned to their home bases.

Baltic and Polish Defence Ministers agreed on joint response to deter Russia

On 11–12 December the Baltic and Polish Defence Ministers at a meeting in in Cesis (Latvia) agreed on joint response to deter Russia in the region.

 

“Baltic States and Poland are facing the same threats, therefore it is crucial to coordinate our response. Let us work with one accord so that Russia knows that its venture to put the principles of NATO collective defence to test might bring about heavy effect,” Minister J.Olekas said at the meeting.

The Parliament of Lithuania approved numbers of Lithuanian military personnel for standby in NATO and EU response forces

Note: deployment of Lithuanian military personnel to multinational operations is regulated by a separate resolution of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.

 

On December 11 the Seimas approved the numbers of personnel of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to be assigned for standby for the NATO Response Force (NRF) and the European Union Battle Groups (EU BGs), as well as for service with the NATO and EU military commands, in 2015-2016.

National Centre of Cyber Security will start functioning as of next year

The National Centre of Cyber Security formed on the basis of a section of the Ministry of National Defence will be inaugurated on January 1, as provided for in the amendments of the Law on Cyber Security and other related legal acts approved by the Seimas of Lithuania on December 11.

On December 11 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička discussed NATO reassurance measures in the Baltic region, security situation in Ukraine and possible ways of delivering assistance to the country, and further perspectives of U.S.-Lithuanian cooperation in international operations at a meeting with Eric Rubin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.

Comment on the disinformation reported to the Lithuanian media

The letter promulgated among the Lithuanian media allegedly on behalf of The European Association for the Defense of Human Rights (AEDH) which reports that a soldier of the United States of America died of Ebola in Lithuania is purposefully discrediting the allies and is aimed at intimidating residents of Rukla. The allies have denied this information and the AEDH has disclaimed sending such letter.

On December 11 Distinguished Visitors and Media Day will take at international Exercise Red Lion in Rukla, Gaižiūnų Training Area. The event will be attended by Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Major General Almantas Leika and Chief of Staff of the Army of Denmark Major General Hans-Christian Mathiesen conducting a visit in Lithuania.

 

The international exercise training reconnaissance units and running in Lithuania on November 24 through December 14 involves roughly 250 soldiers from reconnaissance units of Lithuanian and Danish armies. The exercise is training interoperability, coordination of procedures and readiness to complete reconnaissance assignments in multinational NATO units.
