Official Welcome Ceremony of NATO Military Committee at Cathedral Square

On 19 September an official Welcome Ceremony of the NATO Military Committee was held at Cathedral Square in Vilnius with military honours. It was attended by 28 Chiefs of Defence, International Military Staff, National Military Representatives.

On September 18 NATO Defence Policy Directors agreed at a meeting in the Czech Republic that NATO had to put the decisions made at the NATO Summit in Wales into practice as soon as possible. “NATO allies have to allocate sufficient resources so that necessary infrastructure and headquarters are created and NATO’s response forces in the eastern allies are strengthened,” Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania Vaidotas Urbelis highlighted at the meeting.

The leadership of national defence of Lithuania offers condolences over the death of a Polish soldier in a suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

 

“We extend our deepest sympathy over the death of Sergeant Rafał Celebudzki killed in the line of duty with the NATO International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. The Lithuanian Armed Forces stand firm in solidarity with the Polish Armed Forces in this moment of grief and send condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen,” the condolence letter of Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas to the Chief of Defence of Poland says.

The Military Committee, NATO’s highest Military Authority, will meet in Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) Session from 19-21 September 2014, in Vilnius, Lithuania. The Meeting will be hosted by the Lithuanian Chief of Defence, Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas. This is the first CHODs meeting since the NATO Summit in Wales and the second time that the CHODs have met in Vilnius – the last time was in September 2004.

Exercise Rapid Trident 2014 began in Ukraine

On September 15 a formal opening ceremony of an international Exercise Rapid Trident 2014 was held at the drills ground the International Peace Keeping and Security Center Javorivskyi, in Lviv, Western Ukraine. Roughly 1 thousand exercise participants from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Georgia, Spain, U.S., Canada, Latvia, Poland, Moldova, Norway, Romania, Ukraine and Germany lined up in the square.

At night of September 14 the crew of the C-27J Spartan transport aircraft of the Lithuanian Air Force brought from Dnepropetrovsk thirteen soldiers of a counter-terrorism operations team and one military medic injured in Eastern Ukraine.

 

“Tonight we have brought soldiers wounded in Eastern Ukraine and transferred them to civilian medical care institutions for ultimate treatment. The most of them are in satisfactory medical conditions, several are wounded more seriously, however, we expect that Lithuania’s hospitals will do their best in helping the military,” senior military medic Lieutenant Colonel Gintaras Berkevičius who had been escorting the injured on the flight commented on their conditions.

On September 14 the Standing NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group ONE (SNMCMG1), including the LNS JOTVINGIS (N42) command and supply ship of the Lithuanian Navy, moored for a brief port visit in Klaipėda Seaport.

Canadian aircraft made emergency landing at Šiauliai

One of the Canadian fighter jets deployed on the NATO Baltic Air policing mission aborted a flight training and made an emergency landing at Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuanian Air Force, because of a failure in flight control surface system, September 12. The failure was experienced by the F-18 Hornet of the Canadian Royal Air Force.

 

The aircraft landed successfully, its emergency landing system was not used. Rescue and civilian services were informed about the incident according to standard procedures.

Military personnel of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces (LITHSOF) are taking part in an international special operations forces exercise JACKAL STONE that have begun this week. Several troops of the Lithuanian Land Force are also training alongside SOF personnel at military facilities in Germany and the Netherlands.
