Decisions of the NATO Summit in Wales were discussed at the Ministry of National Defence

On 23-24 September NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) General Adrian Bradshaw conducted a visit at the Ministry of National Defence. General Bradshaw, the Chief of Defence of Lithuania, Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas, and the Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence, Vaidotas Urbelis held a meeting to discuss the decisions made at the NATO Summit in Wales and regional security.

Lithuanian soldiers farewelled the third rotation of their colleagues from the United States

On September 24 the third rotation of troops from the United States Army in Europe’s 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade were farewelled at a formal ceremony held at Rukla garrison. After nearly two months of combined combat training it will be replaced by the 2nd Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, stationed in Texas, U.S.A., that will continue the joint training with Lithuanian forces.

On September 19-22 Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One, SNMCMG1, led by a Lithuanian officer paid a port visit to Rostock, Germany. The unit is deployed in the Baltic Sea region so that maritime security is enhanced and NATO solidarity and commitment to collective defence are ensured.

 

During the port visit the SNMCMG1commander, Commander Giedrius Premeneckas, met with assistant to the mayor of the municipality of Rostock and representative of the leadership of the German Navy Rear Admiral Hans Christian Luther.

New Defence Attaché of Hungary was accredited

On September 22 Lieutenant Colonel Tamas Melke was appointed the new Defence Attaché of Hungary in Lithuania at a formal accreditation ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. The official replaced Colonel Szabolcs Szilágyi whose term of office ended in June.

A new U.S. rotation arrives in Lithuania with heavy combat equipment

A new rotation of U.S. soldiers deployed in Lithuania with heavy combat equipment will begin service in Lithuania on October 1.

 

The shift will come from the 2nd Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, stationed in Texas, U.S.A. It will take over from the infantry personnel of U.S. Army Europe’s 173rd Airborne Brigade currently deployed in Rukla.

On September 19 Ministers of Defence of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, Juozas Olekas, Tomasz Semoniak, and Colonel General Valeriy Heletey respectively, endorsed an intergovernmental agreement on the establishment of LITPOLUKRBRIG, a trilateral brigade to be formed by Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, at a meeting in Warsaw, Poland.

The Chief of Defence of Lithuania, Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas expressed his delight with interesting and intense discussions on further NATO’s actions in response to the changed international security situation when summarizing the results of NATO Military Committee Conference 2014 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

 

While giving his estimation of the measures NATO had already taken and had planned for ensuring the Baltic States’ security, MG J. V. Žukas highlighted that the key task for the Lithuanian Armed Forces was to get ready appropriately for a possible deployment of allied forces.

On September 18 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Ambassador of Italy HE Stefano Taliani de Marchio addressed intensifying defence cooperation between Lithuania and Italy.

 

The Minister expressed his delight with Italy’s plans to contribute to the NATO Baltic Air Policy Mission in 2015.

On September 19, ahead of the NATO Military Committee Conference 2014 in Vilnius, Lithuania, Chiefs of Defence of the Baltic countries and Poland discussed regional security situation and the deliverables of the NATO Summit in Wales at a meeting in Vilnius.

 

The meeting focused on the Command and Control Elements that are planned to be established in the Baltic States and Poland. The Generals exchanged views on the possible requirements for the locations where the Command and Control Elements could be establishment, and discussed their prospective functions and subordination.
