NATO forces train in the Baltic skies

On September 30 - October 1 the 19th Baltic Regional Training Event (BRTE XIX) is organised by Allied Air Command Ramstein, Germany, in the airspace of the Baltic States. Air forces of the Baltic States are training side by side with air capabilities of NATO and partner nations – Canada, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland, at the air training event hosted by Estonia.

On September 30 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička met with State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic Miloš Koterec conducting a one-day visit in Vilnius and discussed the most relevant security issues and possibilities of developing cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats.

On September 30 representatives of the President of Afghanistan and NATO signed the Status of Forces Agreement providing a legal basis for the new NATO training mission Resolute Support as of January 1, 2015.

On October 1 a vessel bringing heavy combat equipment of the U.S. troops deploying for combined exercises with Lithuanian military will moor at Klaipėda Seaport. The troops coming from the 2nd Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, U.S. Army, are bringing along the STRYKER armoured personnel carriers, the BRADLEY fighting infantry vehicles, and other military vehicles.

On September 26-28 Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1), including the LNS JOTVINGIS (N42) of the Lithuanian Navy, conducted a port visit to Stavanger, Norway.

 

During the visit Commander Giedrius Premeneckas, SNMCMG1 Commander, and commanders of SNMCMG1 vessels, met with John Petter Hernes, director of administration of the municipality of Stavanger, and port director Merete Eik.

A part of the U.S. infantry contingent which will bring heavy combat equipment have already arrived in Lithuania

On September 28 roughly 70 military personnel of the U.S. Army arrived in Lithuania. They are a part of the new shift of the rotated U.S. contingent in Lithuania that will replace the infantry soldiers from U.S. Army Europe’s 173rd Airborne Brigade currently stationed in Rukla and attending combined training as from October 1.

 

The shift is expected to total 160 members coming from the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, U.S. Army. The soldiers will bring the STRYKER armoured personnel carriers and the BRADLEY infantry fighting vehicles from their permanent location of deployment in Texas, U.S.A.

On October 1 Lithuanian troops who have completed one more Lithuanian-led international mission in Afghanistan successfully will be welcomed by Vice Minister of National Defence A.Valys at the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force. 

 

The Vice Minister will present medals for Deployment on International Missions to the soldiers who were training helicopter pilots and technical maintenance personnel of the Afghan National Security Forces. The Air Mentoring Team was an important Lithuania’s contribution to the training and strengthening of the Afghan National Security Forces.

On September 24–25 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička took part in the XI international specialised exhibition ARMS AND SECURITY '2014 and an international conference on armament and military equipment in Kyiv, Ukraine, at invitation of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine.

 

After the opening ceremony on September 24 Vice Minister M.Velička and Defence Minister of Ukraine General Lieutenant Valery Galetey held a meeting to discuss points of bilateral Lithuanian-Ukrainian military cooperation.

On September 25 military personnel of the Lithuanian Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion held headquarters deployment exercise near the city of Alytus.

 

Among the training audience there was a contingent formed by the Battalion’s “uhlans” preparing to conduct a standby for the European Union’s rapid reaction force, a European Union Battle Group (EUBG), next year.

Another military team of Lithuania has completed its mission in Afghanistan. A formal ceremony was held at Kandahar Airfield on September 23 for the Lithuanian-led team that had provided training for helicopter pilots and technical maintenance personnel of the Afghan National Army. Lithuania’s deployment of an Air Mentoring Team (AMT) has made a significant contribution to training and strengthening the Afghan National Security Forces.
