From August 7 till the end of the year Commander Giedrius Premeneckas of the Lithuanian Navy will conduct a six-month tour of duty as Commander Standing NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group ONE (SNMCMG1), a unit providing standing maritime capabilities for NATO exercises and actual operations.

 

“This is the first time of a Lithuanian Navy officer taking the command of a NATO’s Standing Naval Force which is a demonstration of Alliance solidarity and cohesion in the face of a threat. We take it as the best evidence of confidence in us and solidarity among the allies,” Vice Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys said at the ceremony.

On August 7 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička discussed security situation in the Baltic region and Ukraine and U.S.-Lithuanian defence cooperation with Republican U.S. Congressman Devin Nunes, U.S. House of Representatives, on visit in Lithuania.

 

“We appreciate the speedy deployment of additional U.S. fighter aircraft and troops in response to the changes in securer situation in the Baltic region. That is a huge support and assurance to the people of Lithuania that the U.S.A., out our key strategic ally, is firmly committed to NATO’s collective defence. We are highly interested that the U.S. presence in Lithuania is maintained after 2014 with approval from the majority of Lithuania’s population,” Vice Minister of National Defence M. Velička said at the meeting.

On August 7 Lithuania is taking charge of Standing NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group ONE (SNMCMG1). Commander Giedrius Premeneckas of the Lithuanian Navy will take over as Commander SNMCMG1 from German Navy Commander Gunther Brassel.

 

This is the first time that the Lithuanian Navy takes command of one of NATO’s Standing Naval Forces.

New Defence Attaché of Norway accredited to Lithuania

On August 5 Defence Attachés of Norway to Lithuania rotated at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. Colonel Britt Brestrup was replaced by Colonel Laila Lie, the newly appointed Norway’s Defence Attaché in Lithuania, in the position.

 

At the ceremony Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička presented to the outgoing Defence Attaché COL B. Brestrup the National Defence System Medal of Merit for the enhancement and development of defence cooperation between Norway and Lithuania.

Air Mentoring Team in Kandahar farewelled colleagues from Ukraine

On July 31 Lithuanian-led Air Mentoring Team (AMT) deployed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, farewelled the Ukrainian part of the team, 3 soldiers, whose deployment to the international operation in Afghanistan was cut short because of the security situation in Ukraine.

 

“To the full extent do I realise the need for Ukraine’s soldiers to return to their country as soon as possible and I thank them for their quality and dedicated service. It has been an honour for Lithuanians to serve side by side with Ukrainian colleagues. I am aware that the aviation experts of both nations had numerous chances to learn from each other,” a letter of Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas to Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Viktor Muzhenko says.

Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 in Klaipėda

August 1, FGS Elbe (German Navy) and Kuršis (M54) (Lithuanian Navy) assigned to the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) moored in Klaipėda. On August 7 Lithuania will assume command of the SNMCMG1.

 

The Elbe and the Kuršis are the first ships of the SNMCMG1 to moor in Klaipėda. Other vessels will gather by the end of the following week to take part in a formal change of command ceremony. Under Lithuania’s command the SNMCMG1 is expected to include mine countermeasures ships from Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Majority of Lithuanian population consent to permanent presence of NATO forces on the territory of Lithuania

According to a public opinion research carried out on request of the Ministry of National Defence, the majority of population in Lithuania, 68 %, approve of permanent presence of NATO forces on the territory of Lithuania.

 

The absolute majority of 85 % agree, totally or partly, that the deployment of allied forces in the Baltic region, has stepped up Lithuania’s security.
