Multinational Exercise Saber Strike 2014 completed in the Baltic States

Multinational Exercise Saber Strike 2014 held concurrently in the three Baltic States concluded June 20. The two-week training event involved over 4.5 thousand participants from 10 NATO member and partner states. The exercise provided an opportunity to train interoperability of allied NATO units, coordination of actions, and readiness to complete defensive and offensive operations. Just like the previous iterations the fourth exercise of Saber Strike series was led by the U.S. Army in Europe (USAREUR) and national armed forces of the Baltic States.

 

“This exercise was a great opportunity to strengthen both, the Baltic States’ and multilateral defence cooperation. We have improved the interoperability of NATO units, coordination of actions and our readiness to complete defensive and offensive operations,” Exercise Director in Lithuania Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Major General Almantas Leika said.

On June 18 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička met with Moldova’s Deputy Defence Minister Aurel Fondos and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Valeriu Chiveri.

 

The Lithuanian and Moldovan representatives have addressed regional security and the progress of defence reforms, exchanged views on the perspectives of contributing to multinational operations, and discussed bilateral defence cooperation.

On June 18 the part of the multinational Exercise Saber Strike 2014 in Lithuania was announced concluded at a formal closing ceremony in Rukla. Several thousand of exercise participants from Denmark, U.S., Lithuania and Poland that have been training in the tactical field exercise in the Gaižiūnų Training Range this week and combat vehicles used lined up on the parade grounds at the event.

 

“As I declare the tactical field exercise of Saber Strike 2014 in Lithuania closed, I must highlight that we have achieved the goals we have set for ourselves,” Exercise Co-Director (Co-EXDIR) in Lithuania Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Major General Almantas Leika.

On June 18 at 5.00 p.m. formal Exercise Closing Ceremony of Saber Strike 2014 will take place at the parade ground of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion in Rukla. The ceremony will involve 2 thousand Denmark’s, Estonia’s. U.S., Latvia’s, Lithuania’s Poland’s and Finland’s soldiers parading on the drill grounds.

 

The Closing Ceremony in Rukla will be conducted in the presence of the Exercise Directors in Lithuania – Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Almantas Leika and Brigadier General Jens Garly, Commander of the IInd Brigade of the Danish Division. The event will be broadcasted live via the official Youtube channel of the Lithuanian Land Force.

On June 17 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed bilateral cooperation, security situation in the region and in Ukraine with Minister of Denmark with Nicolai Wammen in Rukla (Jonavos Distr.).

 

At the meeting which was held at the base of the Lithuanian part of the multinational Exercise Saber Strike 2014 Minister J.Olekas thanked his colleague from Denmark for the weighty contribution of soldiers and combat materiel Denmark had made to the exercise. “This exercise is a wonderful demonstration of the partnership from Denmark’s side and the close cooperation of our forces,” Minister J.Olekas said at the meeting.

On June 14 through the top leadership of the multinational Exercise Saber Strike 2014, Commander of the Danish Division Major General Michael Anker Lollesgaard and Commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard Brigadier General Wesley Craig, conducted a visit to Rukla (Jonavos Distr.). Both of the high guests were satisfied with training results and the host nation support rendered by Lithuania.

On June 17 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Minister of Defence of Denmark Nicolai Wammen will meet in Rukla. The Ministers will discuss the situation in Ukraine, points of regional security, the upcoming NATO Summit in Wales, and other relevant issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

 

After the meeting the Ministers will observe a dynamic display of the multinational Exercise Saber Strike 2014 at the Gaižiūnų Training Range. Denmark’s Minister of Defence will also meet with the Danish military personnel deployed to the exercise. The exercise in Lithuania is training a large number of military personnel with combat equipment – the Leopard 2 A5 main battle tanks, M113 G4 tracked armoured vehicles, CV 9035 tracked armoured infantry combat vehicles, Piranha wheeled infantry fighting vehicles, Duro armoured medical trucks, engineer vehicles of multiple purposes, armoured recovery and evacuation vehicles, Eagle IV armoured wheeled reconnaissance vehicles.

June 17, the DV and Media Day of Exercise Saber Strike 2014 was held at the Gaižiūnų Training Range. It has represented to the public the goals, course and concept of the exercise, and soldiers of Denmark, the U.S., Poland and Lithuania have demonstrated their abilities to execute an allied offensive operation.

 

The event was attended by President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, Speaker of the Seimas Loreta Graužinienė, Defence Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark Nicolai Wammen, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, Officers Conducting the Exercise in Lithuania Major General Almantas Leika and Commander of the IInd Brigade of the Danish Division Jens Garly, commanders of units and services of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, representatives of the embassies of the participating nations, and other guests.

Logistic challenge – support to Exercise Saber Strike 2014

Success of Exercise Saber Strike 2014 running on June 9 through 20 in the Baltic States doubtlessly rests on work done by logistic support personnel too. An exercise of a scope like this is a tough challenge for them.

 

The tactical field exercise taking place in Rukla and the Gaižiūnų Training Range involves over 2,000 military personnel from Denmark, the U.S., Poland, and Lithuania, and uses approx. 800 military vehicles. Logistic personnel of the Lithuanian Armed Forces are ensuring host nation support, i.e. lodging, food, electricity and fuel supply, communications and medical services.
