Culmination of Black Arrow 2014 - airborne landing and assault on objects controlled by an adversary

This year’s largest tactical field exercise Black Arrow 2014 of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade (MIB) Iron Wolf involving approximately 1.5 thousand Lithuanian and U.S. military personnel is at the run-in. On May 22 the major training event will be crowned by a joint airborne landing and assault on enemy objects operation executed by Lithuanian soldiers and NATO allies – U.S. paratroopers.

On May 21 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Staff (COS) Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) General Werner Freers, Commander NATO Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Group Major General Thomas Franz and other senior representatives of other allies’ militaries will attend a DV and Media Day of Exercise Steadfast Cobalt 2014 held at the Division General Stasys Raštikis Lithuanian Armed Forces School in Kaunas.

At a meeting on May 20 in Lithuania Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed regional security issues that matter to Lithuania and NATO with Chief of Staff (COS) Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) General Werner Freers.

 

 

At the meeting Minister J.Olekas expressed his appreciation of the particularly successful collective defence measures that NATO allies had invoked to ensure the Baltic nations’ security. “We have a solid support from Europe in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing Mission as well as we are ready to accept additional ground forces,” J.Olekas said at the meeting.

On May 19 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with Secretary of the U.S. Army John McHugh conducting a two-day visit in Lithuania and addressed issues of regional security relevant to Lithuania and NATO as well as perspectives for further enhancement of defence cooperation with the United States.

 

Minister J.Olekas thanked the Secretary of the U.S. Army for an immediate and significant support in providing response to the menacing developments in Ukraine that can also turn out to be a threat to the security of the Baltic countries, i.e. the deployment of additional fighter aircraft and a company of paratroopers.

On May 17 the most important holiday of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Public and Military Day, came back to the capital of Lithuania after a three-year break. This year the event was held by the White Bridge of Vilnius.

 

The attendance of the festival were invited to observe even two demonstrations of military operations and to meet representatives of NATO allies at the event –  troops of Poland and the United Kingdom deployed on the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission, and U.S. soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

In the evening of May 17 military personnel of a NATO ally, the United States America, and Lithuania completed an airborne landing operation at the Gaižiūnų Training Range, Rukla.

 

According to the exercise scenario generated by the Exercise Directing Staff the reconnaissance personnel of the Lithuanian Mechanised Infantry brigade Iron Wolf and the members of the U.S. 173rd Airborne Brigade executed parachute jumps into a designated theatre of operation.

In the evening of May 17 at about 1900 hrs Lithuanian military and troops of a NATO ally, the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the United States, will conduct a combined airborne operation at the Gaižiūnų Training Range in Rukla (Jonavos Distr.).

Lithuania and Latvia will continue developing cooperation through BALTRON project

On May 15 Defence Policy Directors of Lithuanian and Latvian Ministries of Defence met in Panevėžys. The officials agreed that Lithuania and Latvia will continue the activities of the Baltic Naval Squadron (BALTRON) on a bilateral basis when Estonia withdraws from the project.

 

BALTRON was agreed to include not less than 3 vessels and retain the capacity to enforce maritime safety of Latvia and Lithuania.

On May 13 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas presented the National Defence System Medal of Merit to Steve McCarthy, Director for Security Policy of the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom, for his personal contribution and merits to the development of cooperation between Lithuania and the UK.

The oldest Christian charitable organisation, more than 900 years old Order of Malta has bestowed the Grand Officer Cross with Swords pro Merito Melitensi on Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius. Lithuania’s Chief of Defence was honoured with a high decoration for a long-lived logistic support to the campaign of the Order of Malta “Maltese Soup” which aims at calling the attention of the society to the old, impoverished or ill lonely people.
